He told them, "Elijah indeed comes first, and restores all things. And why is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be rejected?

Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Dressing him in luxurious clothing, they sent him back to Pilate.

"Awake, sword, against my shepherd, and against the man who is close to me," says the LORD of hosts. "Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; and I will turn my hand against the little ones.

He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.

He will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord, their God.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?

Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck.

Arise, God. Plead your own cause. Remember how the foolish man mocks you all day.

The voice of one who calls out, "Prepare the way of the LORD in the wilderness. Make a level highway in the desert for our God.

Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despises, to him whom the nation abhors, to a servant of rulers: "Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall worship; because of the LORD who is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you."

I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who tore out my beard; I did not cover my face from insults and spitting.

Just as many were astonished at you (his appearance was marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men),

LORD, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to put an end to the transgression, and to make an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place.

The LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter, the handsome price that I was valued at by them." I took the thirty pieces of silver, and threw them to the potter, in the house of the LORD.

And in those days John the Baptist came, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea, saying,

Now when John heard in the prison the works of the Messiah, he sent [a message] by his disciples

From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.

The Son of Man goes, even as it is written of him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had not been born."

One of the criminals who hung there insulted him, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."

There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John.

John answered, "A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given to him from heaven.

but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.
