Herodias felt bitterly toward him and wanted him killed. But she could not bring it about,
It was now two days before the festival of the Passover and of Unleavened Bread. And the high priests and scribes were casting about for a way to arrest him by stealth and put him to death,
But after further threats they let them go, as they could find no way to punish them, on account of the people, who were all giving honor to God for what had happened,
Then the commander and his men went and brought them back, but without using violence, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.
But if we say, 'From men,' we have the people to fear, for they all consider John a prophet."
Was John's baptism from heaven or from men? Answer me."
But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet."
