And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

Then Moses and Elijah appeared to them and kept talking with Him.

and if you are willing to accept it, John himself is the Elijah who was to come.

Some of the bystanders, when they heard it, said, "He is calling for Elijah."

Then they asked Him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah has to come first?"

So they asked him again, "What are you then? Elijah?" And he answered, "Of course, I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No."

Then they asked Him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah has to come first?"

by others that Elijah had appeared, and by still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life.
