A certain beggar, named Lazarus, was placed at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. Yes, even the dogs came and licked his sores. It happened that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried.


When he had said this, he shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out." The man who had died came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."

The crowd therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from the dead, was testifying about it. For this cause also the crowd went and met him, because they heard that he had done this sign.


But the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus also, because on account of him many of the Jewish people went away and believed in Jesus.


A large crowd therefore of the Judeans learned that he was there, and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

Then six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead. So they prepared a dinner for him there; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with him.


Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha. It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.
