Wherefore

Jehovah gave the donkey the power of speech. The donkey said to Balaam: What have I done to you? Why have you beaten me these three times?

Do not muzzle the bull while he is threshing.

Your righteousness is like the mountains of God. Your judgments are like great deep water. O Jehovah, you preserve man and beast.

Jehovah is good to all and his mercies are over all his works.

He is the one who gives food to animals and to young ravens when they call out.

Should I not then have regard for Nineveh, that great city, where there are more than one hundred and twenty thousand people that do not know the difference between their right and their left hand, and also many animals?

Withstand thee

God became angry that he was going. So the angel of Jehovah stood in the road to stop him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, accompanied by his two servants.

Thy way

This is because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt. It is because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you.

Better is the poor man who walks in uprightness, than the rich man who is perverse in his ways.

O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him. Remember from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of Jehovah.

And said: You child of the devil, full of all subtlety and mischief, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of Jehovah?

They have eyes full of adultery that cannot cease from sin! They entice unsteady persons. Their hearts are full of covetousness. They are children of cursing.

Before me

That night God came to Balaam and said: If these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.

There the angel of Jehovah appeared to him in a flame of fire coming from the middle of a bush. Moses saw that the bush was on fire but that it was not burning up.

He who walks in uprightness respects Jehovah. He who is perverse in his ways despises him.

Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved: but he who is perverse in his ways will fall at once.
