The Plague Of Israel

1 While Israel remained encamped in Shittim, the people began to commit sexual immorality with Moabite women,

1 While Israel remained at (A)Shittim, the people began (B)to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab.

1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

1 While Israel was staying in the Acacia Grove,(a)(A) the people began to have sexual relations with the women of Moab.

1 Israel settled and remained in Shittim, and the people began to play the prostitute with the women of Moab [by being unfaithful to God].

2 who also invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods. So the people ate what they had sacrificed and then worshipped their gods.

2 For (C)they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

2 The women invited them to the sacrifices for their gods, and the people ate and bowed in worship to their gods.(B)

2 For they invited the Israelites to the sacrifices of their gods, and the Israelites ate [food offered to idols] and bowed down to Moab’s gods.

3 The people joined the Baal-peor cult. As a result, the anger of the LORD flared up against Israel,

3 So (D)Israel joined themselves to (a)Baal of Peor, and the Lord was angry against Israel.

3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

3 So Israel aligned itself with Baal of Peor,(C) and the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.(D)

3 So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor [in worship]. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.

God's Punishment

4 so the LORD told Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight for the LORD, so the LORD's burning anger may be withdrawn from Israel."

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them (b)in broad daylight before the Lord, (E)so that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.”

4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute(b) them in broad daylight before the Lord so that His burning anger may turn away from Israel.”

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people [who have committed sin with the Moabites], and execute them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.”

5 Then Moses ordered the judges of Israel, "Each one of you is to execute the men in his own tribe who joined the Baal-peor cult."

5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you (F)slay his men who have joined themselves to (c)Baal of Peor.”

5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

5 So Moses told Israel’s judges, “Kill each of the men who aligned themselves with Baal of Peor.”

5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each one of you must kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal of Peor [in worship].”

Phinehas Intervenes

6 That very moment, one of the Israelis arrived, bringing to his brothers one of the Midianite women, right in front of Moses and the entire community of Israel, while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting!

6 Then behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought to his (d)relatives a (G)Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, (H)while they were weeping at the doorway of the tent of meeting.

6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

6 An Israelite man came bringing a Midianite woman to his relatives in the sight of Moses and the whole Israelite community while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

6 Then one of the Israelites came and presented to his relatives a Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and the whole congregation of the Israelites, while they were weeping [over God’s judgment] at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting (tabernacle).

7 When Eleazar's son Phinehas, grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up from the middle of the community, grabbed a javelin in his hand,

7 (I)When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand,

7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,

7 When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he left the congregation and took a spear in his hand,

8 followed the Israeli man inside his tent, and impaled the two of them the Israeli man and the woman right through both of them and into her abdomen. Then the plague infecting the Israelis was brought to a halt. Nevertheless,

8 and he went after the man of Israel into the (e)tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the (f)body. (J)So the plague on the sons of Israel was checked.

8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

8 followed the Israelite man into the tent,(c) and drove it through both the Israelite man and the woman—through her belly. Then the plague on the Israelites was stopped,

8 and he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and pierced both of them through the body, the man of Israel and the woman. Then the plague on the Israelites stopped.

9 24,000 people died because of the plague.

9 (K)Those who died by the plague were 24,000.

9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

9 but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.(E)

9 Nevertheless, those [Israelites] who died in the plague numbered 24,000.

The Aftermath

10 The LORD told Moses,

10 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

10 The Lord spoke to Moses,

10 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

11 "Eleazar's son Phinehas, grandson of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from Israel. Because his zealousness reflected my own zeal for them, I didn't consume Israel in my jealousy.

11 (L)Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned away My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel (M)in My jealousy.

11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the Israelites because he was zealous among them with My zeal,(d)(F) so that I did not destroy the Israelites in My zeal.

11 “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the Israelites because he was (a)jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the Israelites in My jealousy.

12 Therefore, I'm certainly going to be giving him my covenant of peace,

12 Therefore say, ‘(N)Behold, I give him My (O)covenant of peace;

12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

12 Therefore declare: I grant him My covenant of peace.(G)

12 Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to Phinehas My covenant of peace.

13 for him and for his descendants after him, too, a covenant of perpetual priesthood, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelis."

13 and it shall be for him and his (g)descendants after him, a covenant of a (P)perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and (Q)made atonement for the sons of Israel.’”

13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

13 It will be a covenant of perpetual priesthood for him and his future descendants,(H) because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”

13 And it shall be for him and his descendants after him, a covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was jealous (impassioned) for [the unique honor and respect owed to] his God and made (b)atonement for the sons of Israel.’”(A)

14 Now the name of the Israeli man who was slain, along with the Midianite woman, was Salu's son Zimri, a leader from the tribe of Simeon.

14 Now the name of the (h)slain man of Israel who was (i)slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s household among the Simeonites.

14 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.

14 The name of the slain Israelite man, who was struck dead with the Midianite woman, was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite ancestral house.

14 Now the name of the man of Israel who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s household among the Simeonites.

15 The woman who was slain, that is, the Midianite woman, was named Cozbi. She was the daughter of Zur, a leader of one of the ancestral houses of Midian.

15 The name of the Midianite woman who was (j)slain was (R)Cozbi the daughter of (S)Zur, (k)who was head of the people of a father’s household in Midian.

15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

15 The name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a tribal head of an ancestral house in Midian.

15 The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was the tribal head of a father’s household in Midian.

Vengeance Against The Midianites

16 Later, the LORD ordered Moses,

16 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

16 The Lord told Moses:

16 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

17 "Attack the Midianites and execute them,

17 (T)Be hostile to the Midianites and strike them;

17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them:

17 “Attack the Midianites and strike them dead.

17 “Provoke hostilities with the Midianites and attack them,

18 because they've acted deceitfully, bringing trouble to you in this incident at Peor with Cozbi, daughter of a prince from Midian, who was killed during the plague that came about because of the incident at Peor."

18 for they have been hostile to you with their tricks, with which they have deceived you in the affair of Peor and in the affair of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was slain on the day of the plague because of Peor.”

18 For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.

18 For they attacked you with the treachery that they used against you in the Peor incident. They did the same in the case involving their sister Cozbi, daughter of the Midianite leader who was killed the day the plague came at Peor.”

18 for they harass you with their tricks, the tricks with which they have deceived you in the matter [of the Baal] of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague because [of the Baal] of Peor.”
