By pride cometh only contention; But with the well-advised is wisdom.

And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply.

And the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thy house upon thee with fire.

And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou say unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou speak unto them, My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.

And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thy heart hath lifted thee up: glory thereof, and abide at home; for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes; But he that is wise hearkeneth unto counsel.

The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.

Hear counsel, and receive instruction, That thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

Every purpose is established by counsel; And by wise guidance make thou war.

The proud and haughty man, scoffer is his name; He worketh in the arrogance of pride.

Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doth not first sit down and count the cost, whether he have wherewith to complete it?

And there arose also a contention among them, which of them was accounted to be greatest.

Now in these days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a murmuring of the Grecian Jews against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.

Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members?

Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying?

I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
