יִהְיֶ֥ה

רִיב֙

rîḇ

בֵּ֣ין

bên

אֲנָשִׁ֔ים

’ă·nā·šîm,

וְנִגְּשׁ֥וּ

wə·nig·gə·šū

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט

ham·miš·pāṭ

וּשְׁפָט֑וּם

ū·šə·p̄ā·ṭūm;

that [the judges] may judge them

וְהִצְדִּ֙יקוּ֙

wə·hiṣ·dî·qū

and they justify

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַצַּדִּ֔יק

haṣ·ṣad·dîq,

the righteous ､

וְהִרְשִׁ֖יעוּ

wə·hir·šî·‘ū

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. הָרָשָֽׁע׃

hā·rā·šā‘.

the wicked .

､ וְהָיָ֛ה

wə·hā·yāh

Then it shall be ､

אִם־

’im-

if

בִּ֥ן

bin

､ הַכּ֖וֹת

hak·kō·wṯ

deserves to be beaten ､

הָרָשָׁ֑ע

hā·rā·šā‘;

､ וְהִפִּיל֤וֹ

wə·hip·pî·lōw

that will cause him to lie down ､

הַשֹּׁפֵט֙

haš·šō·p̄êṭ

וְהִכָּ֣הוּ

wə·hik·kā·hū

and be beaten

､ לְפָנָ֔יו

lə·p̄ā·nāw,

in his presence ､

כְּדֵ֥י

kə·ḏê

､ רִשְׁעָת֖וֹ

riš·‘ā·ṯōw

. בְּמִסְפָּֽר׃

bə·mis·pār.

with a certain number of blows .

אַרְבָּעִ֥ים

’ar·bā·‘îm

יַכֶּ֖נּוּ

yak·ken·nū

blows he may give him

לֹ֣א

lō

[and] no

､ יֹסִ֑יף

yō·sîp̄;

more ､

､ פֶּן־

pen-

lest ､

､ יֹסִ֨יף

yō·sîp̄

he should exceed this ､

לְהַכֹּת֤וֹ

lə·hak·kō·ṯōw

עַל־

‘al-

אֵ֙לֶּה֙

’êl·leh

､ מַכָּ֣ה

mak·kāh

רַבָּ֔ה

rab·bāh,

with many

וְנִקְלָ֥ה

wə·niq·lāh

and be humiliated

אָחִ֖יךָ

’ā·ḥî·ḵā

. לְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃

lə·‘ê·ne·ḵā.

in your sight .

You shall muzzle

שׁ֖וֹר

an ox

. בְּדִישֽׁוֹ׃

and dies ､

אַחַ֤ד

’a·ḥaḏ

one of

מֵהֶם֙

､ וּבֵ֣ן

ū·ḇên

and son ､

אֵֽין־

’ên-

has no

ל֔וֹ

lōw,

to

לֹֽא־

lō-

תִהְיֶ֧ה

shall be [married]

אֵֽשֶׁת־

’ê·šeṯ-

הַמֵּ֛ת

ham·mêṯ

of the dead man

הַח֖וּצָה

ha·ḥū·ṣāh

outside [the family]

לְאִ֣ישׁ

lə·’îš

to

– זָ֑ר

zār;

יְבָמָהּ֙

yə·ḇā·māh

Her husband's brother

יָבֹ֣א

yā·ḇō

shall go in

עָלֶ֔יהָ

‘ā·le·hā,

to her

וּלְקָחָ֥הּ

ū·lə·qā·ḥāh

ל֛וֹ

lōw

､ לְאִשָּׁ֖ה

lə·’iš·šāh

as wife ､

. וְיִבְּמָֽהּ׃

wə·yib·bə·māh.

and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her .

､ וְהָיָ֗ה

wə·hā·yāh,

And it shall be [that] ､

הַבְּכוֹר֙

hab·bə·ḵō·wr

the firstborn son

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

תֵּלֵ֔ד

tê·lêḏ,

יָק֕וּם

yā·qūm

עַל־

‘al-

to

שֵׁ֥ם

the name

אָחִ֖יו

’ā·ḥîw

､ הַמֵּ֑ת

ham·mêṯ;

dead ､

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

that not

יִמָּחֶ֥ה

yim·mā·ḥeh

may be blotted out

שְׁמ֖וֹ

šə·mōw

. מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

mî·yiś·rā·’êl.

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

But if

לֹ֤א

יַחְפֹּץ֙

yaḥ·pōṣ

הָאִ֔ישׁ

hā·’îš,

the man

לָקַ֖חַת

lā·qa·ḥaṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ יְבִמְתּ֑וֹ

yə·ḇim·tōw;

his brother's widow ､

וְעָלְתָה֩

wə·‘ā·lə·ṯāh

then let go up

יְבִמְתּ֨וֹ

yə·ḇim·tōw

his brother's widow

הַשַּׁ֜עְרָה

haš·ša‘·rāh

to the gate

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים

haz·zə·qê·nîm,

the elders ､

､ וְאָֽמְרָה֙

wə·’ā·mə·rāh

and say ､

מֵאֵ֨ין

mê·’ên

יְבָמִ֜י

yə·ḇā·mî

My husband's brother

לְהָקִ֨ים

lə·hā·qîm

to raise up

לְאָחִ֥יו

lə·’ā·ḥîw

שֵׁם֙

šêm

､ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

bə·yiś·rā·’êl,

in Israel ､

לֹ֥א

lō

not

אָבָ֖ה

’ā·ḇāh

he will

. יַבְּמִֽי׃

yab·bə·mî.

perform the duty of my brother-in-law .

וְקָֽרְאוּ־

wə·qā·rə·’ū-

ל֥וֹ

זִקְנֵי־

ziq·nê-

עִיר֖וֹ

‘î·rōw

וְדִבְּר֣וּ

wə·ḏib·bə·rū

אֵלָ֑יו

to him

וְעָמַ֣ד

but [if] he stands firm

､ וְאָמַ֔ר

wə·’ā·mar,

and says ､

לֹ֥א

חָפַ֖צְתִּי

ḥā·p̄aṣ·tî

I do want

. לְקַחְתָּֽהּ׃

lə·qaḥ·tāh.

וְנִגְּשָׁ֨ה

wə·nig·gə·šāh

Then shall come

יְבִמְתּ֣וֹ

yə·ḇim·tōw

his brother's widow

אֵלָיו֮

’ê·lāw

to him

לְעֵינֵ֣י

lə·‘ê·nê

in the presence

､ הַזְּקֵנִים֒

haz·zə·qê·nîm

of the elders ､

וְחָלְצָ֤ה

wə·ḥā·lə·ṣāh

נַעֲלוֹ֙

na·‘ă·lōw

מֵעַ֣ל

mê·‘al

､ רַגְל֔וֹ

raḡ·lōw,

וְיָרְקָ֖ה

wə·yā·rə·qāh

and spit

､ בְּפָנָ֑יו

bə·p̄ā·nāw;

in his face ､

וְעָֽנְתָה֙

wə·‘ā·nə·ṯāh

､ וְאָ֣מְרָ֔ה

wə·’ā·mə·rāh,

and say ､

כָּ֚כָה

kā·ḵāh

so

יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה

yê·‘ā·śeh

shall it be done

לָאִ֔ישׁ

lā·’îš,

to the man

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

לֹא־

lō-

not

יִבְנֶ֖ה

yiḇ·neh

will build up

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בֵּ֥ית

bêṯ

. אָחִֽיו‪‬‪‬

’ā·ḥîw.

of his brother .

וְנִקְרָ֥א

wə·niq·rā

And shall be called

שְׁמ֖וֹ

šə·mōw

､ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

bə·yiś·rā·’êl;

in Israel ､

בֵּ֖ית

bêṯ

חֲל֥וּץ

ḥă·lūṣ

of him who had removed

. הַנָּֽעַל׃

han·nā·‘al.

the wife

לְהַצִּ֥יל

lə·haṣ·ṣîl

אֶת־

’eṯ-

אִישָׁ֖הּ

’îš·šāh

מִיַּ֣ד

mî·yaḏ

מַכֵּ֑הוּ

mak·kê·hū;

of the one attacking him

וְשָׁלְחָ֣ה

wə·šā·lə·ḥāh

､ יָדָ֔הּ

yā·ḏāh,

וְהֶחֱזִ֖יקָה

wə·he·ḥĕ·zî·qāh

､ בִּמְבֻשָֽׁיו׃

bim·ḇu·šāw.

by the genitals ､

וְקַצֹּתָ֖ה

wə·qaṣ·ṣō·ṯāh

then you shall cut off

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ כַּפָּ֑הּ

kap·pāh;

לֹ֥א

shall pity [her]

. עֵינֶֽךָ׃
