הַשָּׂרִים֙

､ לֵאמֹ֔ר

lê·mōr,

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

נִבְדְּל֞וּ

niḇ·də·lū

have separated themselves

הָעָ֤ם

hā·‘ām

､ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙

yiś·rā·’êl

of Israel ､

､ וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים

wə·hak·kō·hă·nîm

and the priests ､

､ וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם

wə·hal·wî·yim,

and the Levites ､

מֵעַמֵּ֖י

mê·‘am·mê

from the peoples

､ הָאֲרָצ֑וֹת

hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ;

of the lands ､

､ כְּ֠תוֹעֲבֹֽתֵיהֶם

kə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇō·ṯê·hem

[doing] with respect to the abominations ､

､ לַכְּנַעֲנִ֨י

lak·kə·na·‘ă·nî

of the Canaanite ､

､ הַחִתִּ֜י

ha·ḥit·tî

the Hittite ､

､ הַפְּרִזִּ֣י

hap·pə·riz·zî

the Perizzite ､

､ הַיְבוּסִ֗י

hay·ḇū·sî,

the Jebusite ､

､ הָֽעַמֹּנִי֙

hā·‘am·mō·nî

the Ammonite ､

､ הַמֹּ֣אָבִ֔י

ham·mō·’ā·ḇî,

the Moabite ､

､ הַמִּצְרִ֖י

ham·miṣ·rî

the Egyptian ､

. וְהָאֱמֹרִֽי׃

wə·hā·’ĕ·mō·rî.

and the Amorite .

כִּֽי־

kî-

נָשְׂא֣וּ

nā·śə·’ū

they have taken

מִבְּנֹֽתֵיהֶ֗ם

mib·bə·nō·ṯê·hem,

some of their daughters [as wives]

לָהֶם֙

lā·hem

､ וְלִבְנֵיהֶ֔ם

wə·liḇ·nê·hem,

and their sons ､

וְהִתְעָֽרְבוּ֙

wə·hiṯ·‘ā·rə·ḇū

so that is mixed

זֶ֣רַע

ze·ra‘

הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ

haq·qō·ḏeš,

the holy

בְּעַמֵּ֖י

bə·‘am·mê

with the peoples

– הָאֲרָצ֑וֹת

hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ;

of [those] lands –

וְיַ֧ד

wə·yaḏ

and indeed the hand

הַשָּׂרִ֣ים

haś·śā·rîm

of the leaders

וְהַסְּגָנִ֗ים

wə·has·sə·ḡā·nîm,

הָֽיְתָ֛ה

hā·yə·ṯāh

. בַּמַּ֥עַל

bam·ma·‘al

הַזֶּ֖ה

haz·zeh

. רִאשׁוֹנָֽה׃

So when I heard

､ הַדָּבָ֣ר

הַזֶּ֔ה

haz·zeh,

קָרַ֥עְתִּי

qā·ra‘·tî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

בִּגְדִ֖י

biḡ·ḏî

､ וּמְעִילִ֑י

ū·mə·‘î·lî;

and my robe ､

וָאֶמְרְטָ֞ה

wā·’em·rə·ṭāh

and plucked out

מִשְּׂעַ֤ר

miś·śə·‘ar

some of the hair

רֹאשִׁי֙

rō·šî

of my head

､ וּזְקָנִ֔י

ū·zə·qā·nî,

and beard ､

וָאֵשְׁבָ֖ה

wā·’ê·šə·ḇāh

. מְשׁוֹמֵֽם׃

mə·šō·w·mêm.

וְאֵלַ֣י

wə·’ê·lay

And to me

יֵאָסְפ֗וּ

yê·’ā·sə·p̄ū,

כֹּ֤ל

kōl

חָרֵד֙

ḥā·rêḏ

בְּדִבְרֵ֣י

bə·ḏiḇ·rê

at the words

אֱלֹהֵֽי־

’ĕ·lō·hê-

of the God

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

of Israel ､

עַ֖ל

‘al

מַ֣עַל

ma·‘al

of the transgression

– הַגּוֹלָ֑ה

hag·gō·w·lāh;

of those who had been carried away captive –

וַאֲנִי֙

wa·’ă·nî

and I

יֹשֵׁ֣ב

yō·šêḇ

מְשׁוֹמֵ֔ם

mə·šō·w·mêm,

עַ֖ד

‘aḏ

לְמִנְחַ֥ת

lə·min·ḥaṯ

. הָעָֽרֶב׃

hā·‘ā·reḇ.

Ezra's Prayer of Confession

וּבְמִנְחַ֣ת

And at sacrifice

הָעֶ֗רֶב

hā·‘e·reḇ,

קַ֚מְתִּי

qam·tî

– מִתַּֽעֲנִיתִ֔י

mit·ta·‘ă·nî·ṯî,

from my fasting –

וּבְקָרְעִ֥י

ū·ḇə·qā·rə·‘î

and having torn

בִגְדִ֖י

ḇiḡ·ḏî

､ וּמְעִילִ֑י

ū·mə·‘î·lî;

and my robe ､

וָֽאֶכְרְעָה֙

wā·’eḵ·rə·‘āh

and I fell

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ בִּרְכַּ֔י

bir·kay,

my knees ､

וָאֶפְרְשָׂ֥ה

wā·’ep̄·rə·śāh

כַפַּ֖י

אֶל־

to

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

､ אֱלֹהָֽי׃

’ĕ·lō·hāy.

my God ､

､ וָאֹמְרָ֗ה

wā·’ō·mə·rāh,

and I said ､

､ אֱלֹהַי֙

my God ､

בֹּ֣שְׁתִּי

bō·šə·tî

I am too ashamed

וְנִכְלַ֔מְתִּי

wə·niḵ·lam·tî,

לְהָרִ֧ים

lə·hā·rîm

to lift up

､ אֱלֹהַ֛י

’ĕ·lō·hay

my God ､

פָּנַ֖י

pā·nay

אֵלֶ֑יךָ

’ê·le·ḵā;

to You

כִּ֣י

kî

עֲוֺנֹתֵ֤ינוּ

‘ă·wō·nō·ṯê·nū

רָבוּ֙

לְמַ֣עְלָה

､ רֹּ֔אשׁ

[our] heads ､

וְאַשְׁמָתֵ֥נוּ

Since the days –

אֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ

’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū,

אֲנַ֙חְנוּ֙

’ă·naḥ·nū

בְּאַשְׁמָ֣ה

bə·’aš·māh

גְדֹלָ֔ה

ḡə·ḏō·lāh,

עַ֖ד

‘aḏ

to

. הַיּ֣וֹם

hay·yō·wm

הַזֶּ֑ה

haz·zeh;

וּבַעֲוֺנֹתֵ֡ינוּ

ū·ḇa·‘ă·wō·nō·ṯê·nū

for our iniquities

נִתַּ֡נּוּ

nit·tan·nū

have been delivered

､ אֲנַחְנוּ֩

’ă·naḥ·nū

we ､

､ מְלָכֵ֨ינוּ

mə·lā·ḵê·nū

､ כֹהֲנֵ֜ינוּ

ḵō·hă·nê·nū

[and] our priests ､

בְּיַ֣ד ׀

bə·yaḏ

מַלְכֵ֣י

mal·ḵê

of the kings

､ הָאֲרָצ֗וֹת

hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ,

of the lands ､

､ בַּחֶ֜רֶב

ba·ḥe·reḇ

to the sword ､

､ בַּשְּׁבִ֧י

baš·šə·ḇî

to captivity ､

､ וּבַבִּזָּ֛ה

ū·ḇab·biz·zāh

and to plunder ､

וּבְבֹ֥שֶׁת

ū·ḇə·ḇō·šeṯ

and to humiliation

､ פָּנִ֖ים

pā·nîm

of face ､

כְּהַיּ֥וֹם

kə·hay·yō·wm

as [it is] day

. הַזֶּֽה׃

haz·zeh.

וְעַתָּ֡ה

wə·‘at·tāh

כִּמְעַט־

kim·‘aṭ-

רֶגַע֩

re·ḡa‘

הָיְתָ֨ה

hā·yə·ṯāh

has been [shown]

תְחִנָּ֜ה

ṯə·ḥin·nāh

מֵאֵ֣ת ׀

mê·’êṯ

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

､ אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ

’ĕ·lō·hê·nū,

לְהַשְׁאִ֥יר

lə·haš·’îr

to leave a remnant

לָ֙נוּ֙

lā·nū

us

､ פְּלֵיטָ֔ה

pə·lê·ṭāh,

to escape ､

וְלָתֶת־

wə·lā·ṯeṯ-

and to give

לָ֥נוּ

lā·nū

us

יָתֵ֖ד

yā·ṯêḏ

､ בִּמְק֣וֹם

bim·qō·wm

in place ､

קָדְשׁ֑וֹ

qā·ḏə·šōw;

לְהָאִ֤יר

lə·hā·’îr

that may enlighten

､ עֵינֵ֙ינוּ֙

‘ê·nê·nū

אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ

’ĕ·lō·hê·nū,

וּלְתִתֵּ֛נוּ

ū·lə·ṯit·tê·nū

and give us

מִֽחְיָ֥ה

miḥ·yāh

מְעַ֖ט

mə·‘aṭ

. בְּעַבְדֻתֵֽנוּ׃

bə·‘aḇ·ḏu·ṯê·nū.

of in our bondage .

כִּֽי־

kî-

– עֲבָדִ֣ים

‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm

אֲנַ֔חְנוּ

’ă·naḥ·nū,

we [were]

､ וּבְעַבְדֻ֔תֵנוּ

ū·ḇə·‘aḇ·ḏu·ṯê·nū,

and yet in our bondage ､

לֹ֥א

lō

not

עֲזָבָ֖נוּ

‘ă·zā·ḇā·nū

אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ

’ĕ·lō·hê·nū;

וַֽיַּט־

way·yaṭ-

but He extended

עָלֵ֣ינוּ

‘ā·lê·nū

to us

חֶ֡סֶד

ḥe·seḏ

לִפְנֵי֩

lip̄·nê

in the sight

מַלְכֵ֨י

mal·ḵê

of the kings

､ פָרַ֜ס

p̄ā·ras

of Persia ､

לָֽתֶת־

lā·ṯeṯ-

to

לָ֣נוּ

lā·nū

us

､ מִֽחְיָ֗ה

miḥ·yāh,

לְרוֹמֵ֞ם

lə·rō·w·mêm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בֵּ֤ית

bêṯ

､ אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙

’ĕ·lō·hê·nū

of our God ､

וּלְהַעֲמִ֣יד

ū·lə·ha·‘ă·mîḏ

and to rebuild

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

חָרְבֹתָ֔יו

ḥā·rə·ḇō·ṯāw,

וְלָֽתֶת־

wə·lā·ṯeṯ-

and to give

לָ֣נוּ

lā·nū

us

גָדֵ֔ר

ḡā·ḏêr,

בִּֽיהוּדָ֖ה

bî·hū·ḏāh

. וּבִירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim.

and Jerusalem .

we have forsaken

､ מִצְוֺתֶֽיךָ׃

miṣ·wō·ṯe·ḵā.

Your commandments ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

צִוִּ֗יתָ

ṣiw·wî·ṯā,

בְּיַ֨ד

bə·yaḏ

by

עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ

‘ă·ḇā·ḏe·ḵā

､ הַנְּבִיאִים֮

han·nə·ḇî·’îm

the prophets ､

､ לֵאמֹר֒

lê·mōr

､ הָאָ֗רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

the land ､

אֲשֶׁ֨ר

’ă·šer

אַתֶּ֤ם

’at·tem

בָּאִים֙

bā·’îm

לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ

lə·riš·tāh,

אֶ֤רֶץ

’e·reṣ

נִדָּה֙

nid·dāh

הִ֔יא

hî,

is

בְּנִדַּ֖ת

with the uncleanness

עַמֵּ֣י

‘am·mê

of the peoples

､ הָאֲרָצ֑וֹת

hā·’ă·rā·ṣō·wṯ;

of the lands ､

､ בְּתוֹעֲבֹֽתֵיהֶ֗ם

bə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇō·ṯê·hem,

with their abominations ､

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

מִלְא֛וּהָ

mil·’ū·hā

מִפֶּ֥ה

mip·peh

אֶל־

to

פֶּ֖ה

. בְּטֻמְאָתָֽם׃

with their impurity .

וְ֠עַתָּה

בְּֽנוֹתֵיכֶ֞ם

אַל־

’al-

not

תִּתְּנ֣וּ

do give as wives

､ לִבְנֵיהֶ֗ם

liḇ·nê·hem,

for their sons ､

וּבְנֹֽתֵיהֶם֙

ū·ḇə·nō·ṯê·hem

and their daughters

אַל־

’al-

תִּשְׂא֣וּ

tiś·’ū

､ לִבְנֵיכֶ֔ם

liḇ·nê·ḵem,

to your sons ､

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

תִדְרְשׁ֧וּ

ṯiḏ·rə·šū

שְׁלֹמָ֛ם

šə·lō·mām

וְטוֹבָתָ֖ם

wə·ṭō·w·ḇā·ṯām

עַד־

‘aḏ-

– עוֹלָ֑ם

‘ō·w·lām;

ever –

לְמַ֣עַן

lə·ma·‘an

､ תֶּחֶזְק֗וּ

te·ḥez·qū,

you may be strong ､

וַאֲכַלְתֶּם֙

wa·’ă·ḵal·tem

and eat

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

ט֣וּב

ṭūḇ

the good

､ הָאָ֔רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

of the land ､

וְהוֹרַשְׁתֶּ֥ם

wə·hō·w·raš·tem

and leave [it] as an inheritance

לִבְנֵיכֶ֖ם

liḇ·nê·ḵem

to your children

עַד־

‘aḏ-

. עוֹלָֽם׃

‘ō·w·lām.

וְאַֽחֲרֵי֙

wə·’a·ḥă·rê

כָּל־

kāl-

הַבָּ֣א

hab·bā

עָלֵ֔ינוּ

‘ā·lê·nū,

､ בְּמַעֲשֵׂ֙ינוּ֙

bə·ma·‘ă·śê·nū

for our deeds ､

הָרָעִ֔ים

hā·rā·‘îm,

､ וּבְאַשְׁמָתֵ֖נוּ

ū·ḇə·’aš·mā·ṯê·nū

for our guilt ､

הַגְּדֹלָ֑ה

hag·gə·ḏō·lāh;

כִּ֣י ׀

kî

אַתָּ֣ה

’at·tāh

אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ

’ĕ·lō·hê·nū,

חָשַׂ֤כְתָּֽ

ḥā·śaḵ·tā

have punished us

לְמַ֙טָּה֙

lə·maṭ·ṭāh

מֵֽעֲוֺנֵ֔נוּ

mê·‘ă·wō·nê·nū,

than our iniquities [deserve]

וְנָתַ֥תָּה

wə·nā·ṯat·tāh

לָּ֛נוּ

lā·nū

us

פְּלֵיטָ֖ה

pə·lê·ṭāh

[such] deliverance

– כָּזֹֽאת׃

kā·zōṯ.

as this –

הֲנָשׁוּב֙

hă·nā·šūḇ

should we again

לְהָפֵ֣ר

lə·hā·p̄êr

､ מִצְוֺתֶ֔יךָ

miṣ·wō·ṯe·ḵā,

Your commandments ､

וּ֨לְהִתְחַתֵּ֔ן

ū·lə·hiṯ·ḥat·tên,

and join in marriage

בְּעַמֵּ֥י

bə·‘am·mê

with the people [committing]

؟ הַתֹּעֵב֖וֹת

hat·tō·‘ê·ḇō·wṯ

abominations ؟

הָאֵ֑לֶּה

hā·’êl·leh;

הֲל֤וֹא

hă·lō·w

תֶֽאֱנַף־

ṯe·’ĕ·nap̄-

בָּ֙נוּ֙

bā·nū

with us

עַד־

‘aḏ-

כַּלֵּ֔ה

kal·lêh,

You had consumed [us]

לְאֵ֥ין

lə·’ên

so that [there would be] no

שְׁאֵרִ֖ית

šə·’ê·rîṯ

؟ וּפְלֵיטָֽה׃

ū·p̄ə·lê·ṭāh.

– כְּהַיּ֣וֹם

as [it is] day –

haz·zeh;

הִנְנ֤וּ

hin·nū

לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙

lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā

､ בְּאַשְׁמָתֵ֔ינוּ

bə·’aš·mā·ṯê·nū,

in our guilt ､

כִּ֣י

kî

אֵ֥ין

’ên

no one

לַעֲמ֛וֹד

la·‘ă·mō·wḏ

לְפָנֶ֖יךָ

lə·p̄ā·ne·ḵā

עַל־

‘al-
