The Root of Jesse

וְיָצָ֥א

wə·yā·ṣā

And there shall come forth

חֹ֖טֶר

ḥō·ṭer

מִגֵּ֣זַע

mig·gê·za‘

､ יִשָׁ֑י

yi·šāy;

of Jesse ､

וְנֵ֖צֶר

wə·nê·ṣer

and a Branch

– מִשָּׁרָשָׁ֥יו

miš·šā·rā·šāw

out of his roots –

. יִפְרֶֽה׃

yip̄·reh.

וְנָחָ֥ה

wə·nā·ḥāh

עָלָ֖יו

‘ā·lāw

ר֣וּחַ

rū·aḥ

יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

ר֧וּחַ

rū·aḥ

חָכְמָ֣ה

ḥāḵ·māh

､ וּבִינָ֗ה

ū·ḇî·nāh,

and understanding ､

ר֤וּחַ

rū·aḥ

עֵצָה֙

‘ê·ṣāh

､ וּגְבוּרָ֔ה

ū·ḡə·ḇū·rāh,

and might ､

ר֥וּחַ

rū·aḥ

דַּ֖עַת

da·‘aṯ

וְיִרְאַ֥ת

wə·yir·’aṯ

and of the fear

– יְהוָֽה׃

Yah·weh.

of Yahweh –

וַהֲרִיח֖וֹ

wa·hă·rî·ḥōw

and His delight [is]

בְּיִרְאַ֣ת

bə·yir·’aṯ

in the fear

､ יְהוָ֑ה

Yah·weh;

of Yahweh ､

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

and not

לְמַרְאֵ֤ה

lə·mar·’êh

by the sight

､ עֵינָיו֙

‘ê·nāw

of His eyes ､

יִשְׁפּ֔וֹט

yiš·pō·wṭ,

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

לְמִשְׁמַ֥ע

lə·miš·ma‘

by the hearing

– אָזְנָ֖יו

’ā·zə·nāw

of His ears –

. יוֹכִֽיחַ׃

yō·w·ḵî·aḥ.

וְשָׁפַ֤ט

wə·šā·p̄aṭ

But He shall judge

בְּצֶ֙דֶק֙

bə·ṣe·ḏeq

with righteousness

､ דַּלִּ֔ים

dal·lîm,

the poor ､

וְהוֹכִ֥יחַ

wə·hō·w·ḵî·aḥ

בְּמִישׁ֖וֹר

bə·mî·šō·wr

לְעַנְוֵי־

lə·‘an·wê-

– אָ֑רֶץ

’ā·reṣ;

of the earth –

וְהִֽכָּה־

wə·hik·kāh-

and He shall strike

אֶ֙רֶץ֙

’e·reṣ

בְּשֵׁ֣בֶט

bə·šê·ḇeṭ

with the rod

､ פִּ֔יו

pîw,

of His mouth ､

וּבְר֥וּחַ

ū·ḇə·rū·aḥ

and with the breath

שְׂפָתָ֖יו

śə·p̄ā·ṯāw

יָמִ֥ית

yā·mîṯ

. רָשָֽׁע׃

rā·šā‘.

the wicked .

וְהָ֥יָה

wə·hā·yāh

And shall be

צֶ֖דֶק

ṣe·ḏeq

אֵז֣וֹר

’ê·zō·wr

the belt

､ מָתְנָ֑יו

mā·ṯə·nāw;

of His loins ､

וְהָאֱמוּנָ֖ה

wə·hā·’ĕ·mū·nāh

and faithfulness

אֵז֥וֹר

’ê·zō·wr

the belt

. חֲלָצָֽיו׃

ḥă·lā·ṣāw.

וְגָ֤ר

wə·ḡār

And shall dwell

זְאֵב֙

zə·’êḇ

the wolf

עִם־

‘im-

with

､ כֶּ֔בֶשׂ

ke·ḇeś,

the lamb ､

וְנָמֵ֖ר

wə·nā·mêr

and the leopard

עִם־

‘im-

with

– גְּדִ֣י

gə·ḏî

the young goat –

יִרְבָּ֑ץ

yir·bāṣ;

וְעֵ֨גֶל

wə·‘ê·ḡel

and the calf

וּכְפִ֤יר

ū·ḵə·p̄îr

and the young lion

וּמְרִיא֙

ū·mə·rî

and the fatling

– יַחְדָּ֔ו

yaḥ·dāw,

וְנַ֥עַר

wə·na·‘ar

and a child

קָטֹ֖ן

qā·ṭōn

נֹהֵ֥ג

nō·hêḡ

. בָּֽם׃

bām.

וּפָרָ֤ה

ū·p̄ā·rāh

And the cow

וָדֹב֙

wā·ḏōḇ

and the bear

– תִּרְעֶ֔ינָה

tir·‘e·nāh,

shall graze –

– יַחְדָּ֖ו

yaḥ·dāw

יִרְבְּצ֣וּ

yir·bə·ṣū

יַלְדֵיהֶ֑ן

yal·ḏê·hen;

their young ones

וְאַרְיֵ֖ה

wə·’ar·yêh

and the lion

כַּבָּקָ֥ר

kab·bā·qār

like the ox

יֹֽאכַל־

yō·ḵal-

. תֶּֽבֶן׃

te·ḇen.

וְשִֽׁעֲשַׁ֥ע

wə·ši·‘ă·ša‘

יוֹנֵ֖ק

yō·w·nêq

the nursing child

עַל־

‘al-

by

חֻ֣ר

ḥur

the hole

､ פָּ֑תֶן

pā·ṯen;

of cobra ､

וְעַל֙

wə·‘al

and in

. מְאוּרַ֣ת

mə·’ū·raṯ

the den .

צִפְעוֹנִ֔י

ṣip̄·‘ō·w·nî,

גָּמ֖וּל

gā·mūl

the weaned child

יָד֥וֹ

yā·ḏōw

. הָדָֽה׃

hā·ḏāh.

לֹֽא־

lō-

Not

יָרֵ֥עוּ

yā·rê·‘ū

they shall hurt

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

יַשְׁחִ֖יתוּ

yaš·ḥî·ṯū

בְּכָל־

bə·ḵāl

in all

､ הַ֣ר

har

קָדְשִׁ֑י

qāḏ·šî

כִּֽי־

kî-

מָלְאָ֣ה

mā·lə·’āh

הָאָ֗רֶץ

hā·’ā·reṣ,

דֵּעָה֙

dê·‘āh

of the knowledge

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

כַּמַּ֖יִם

kam·ma·yim

as the waters

לַיָּ֥ם

lay·yām

the sea

. מְכַסִּֽים׃

mə·ḵas·sîm.

וְהָיָה֙

wə·hā·yāh

And there shall be

בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

in day

הַה֔וּא

ha·hū,

שֹׁ֣רֶשׁ

šō·reš

､ יִשַׁ֗י

yi·šay,

of Jesse ､

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

עֹמֵד֙

‘ō·mêḏ

לְנֵ֣ס

lə·nês

as a banner to

– עַמִּ֔ים

‘am·mîm,

the people –

אֵלָ֖יו

’ê·lāw

גּוֹיִ֣ם

gō·w·yim

– יִדְרֹ֑שׁוּ

yiḏ·rō·šū;

shall seek Him –

וְהָיְתָ֥ה

wə·hā·yə·ṯāh

and shall be

מְנֻחָת֖וֹ

mə·nu·ḥā·ṯōw

His resting place

. כָּבֽוֹד׃

kā·ḇō·wḏ.

And it shall come to pass

､ בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

in day ､

הַה֗וּא

ha·hū,

יוֹסִ֨יף

yō·w·sîp̄

[That] shall set again

אֲדֹנָ֤י ׀

’ă·ḏō·nāy

שֵׁנִית֙

šê·nîṯ

the second [time]

יָד֔וֹ

yā·ḏōw,

לִקְנ֖וֹת

liq·nō·wṯ

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

שְׁאָ֣ר

šə·’ār

､ עַמּ֑וֹ

‘am·mōw;

of His people ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

､ יִשָּׁאֵר֩

yiš·šā·’êr

מֵאַשּׁ֨וּר

mê·’aš·šūr

וּמִמִּצְרַ֜יִם

ū·mim·miṣ·ra·yim

וּמִפַּתְר֣וֹס

ū·mip·paṯ·rō·ws

and from Pathros

וּמִכּ֗וּשׁ

ū·mik·kūš,

and Cush

וּמֵעֵילָ֤ם

ū·mê·‘ê·lām

וּמִשִּׁנְעָר֙

ū·miš·šin·‘ār

וּמֵ֣חֲמָ֔ת

ū·mê·ḥă·māṯ,

and from Hamath

וּמֵאִיֵּ֖י

ū·mê·’î·yê

and the islands

. הַיָּֽם׃

hay·yām.

of the sea .

וְנָשָׂ֥א

wə·nā·śā

And He will set up

נֵס֙

nês

､ לַגּוֹיִ֔ם

lag·gō·w·yim,

for the nations ､

וְאָסַ֖ף

wə·’ā·sap̄

and will assemble

נִדְחֵ֣י

niḏ·ḥê

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

yiś·rā·’êl;

of Israel ､

וּנְפֻצ֤וֹת

ū·nə·p̄u·ṣō·wṯ

and the dispersed

יְהוּדָה֙

yə·hū·ḏāh

יְקַבֵּ֔ץ

yə·qab·bêṣ,

gather together

מֵאַרְבַּ֖ע

mê·’ar·ba‘

כַּנְפ֥וֹת

kan·p̄ō·wṯ

. הָאָֽרֶץ׃

hā·’ā·reṣ.

of the earth .

､ וְסָ֙רָה֙

wə·sā·rāh

And shall depart ､

קִנְאַ֣ת

qin·’aṯ

the envy

אֶפְרַ֔יִם

’ep̄·ra·yim,

וְצֹרְרֵ֥י

wə·ṣō·rə·rê

and the adversaries

יְהוּדָ֖ה

yə·hū·ḏāh

– יִכָּרֵ֑תוּ

yik·kā·rê·ṯū;

shall be cut off –

אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙

’ep̄·ra·yim

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

יְקַנֵּ֣א

yə·qan·nê

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ יְהוּדָ֔ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

וִֽיהוּדָ֖ה

wî·hū·ḏāh

לֹֽא־

lō-

not

יָצֹ֥ר

yā·ṣōr

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

. אֶפְרָֽיִם׃

’ep̄·rā·yim.

וְעָפ֨וּ

wə·‘ā·p̄ū

But they shall fly down

בְכָתֵ֤ף

ḇə·ḵā·ṯêp̄

upon the shoulder

פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙

pə·liš·tîm

of the Philistines

– יָ֔מָּה

yām·māh,

toward the west –

– יַחְדָּ֖ו

yaḥ·dāw

יָבֹ֣זּוּ

yā·ḇōz·zū

they shall plunder

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

בְּנֵי־

bə·nê-

the sons

קֶ֑דֶם

qe·ḏem;

of on the East

אֱד֤וֹם

’ĕ·ḏō·wm

– וּמוֹאָב֙

ū·mō·w·’āḇ

and Moab –

מִשְׁל֣וֹח‪‬

miš·lō·wḥ

יָדָ֔ם

yā·ḏām,

וּבְנֵ֥י

ū·ḇə·nê

and the sons

עַמּ֖וֹן

‘am·mō·wn

. מִשְׁמַעְתָּֽם׃

miš·ma‘·tām.

shall obey them .

וְהֶחֱרִ֣ים

wə·he·ḥĕ·rîm

And will utterly destroy

יְהוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

אֵ֚ת

’êṯ

-

לְשׁ֣וֹן

lə·šō·wn

– יָם־

yām-

of the Sea –

מִצְרַ֔יִם

miṣ·ra·yim,

וְהֵנִ֥יף

wə·hê·nîp̄

and He will shake

יָד֛וֹ

yā·ḏōw

עַל־

‘al-

､ הַנָּהָ֖ר

han·nā·hār

the River ､

בַּעְיָ֣ם

ba‘·yām

רוּח֑וֹ

rū·ḥōw;

וְהִכָּ֙הוּ֙

wə·hik·kā·hū

and strike it

לְשִׁבְעָ֣ה

lə·šiḇ·‘āh

､ נְחָלִ֔ים

nə·ḥā·lîm,

the streams ､

וְהִדְרִ֖יךְ

wə·hiḏ·rîḵ

and make [men] cross over

. בַּנְּעָלִֽים׃

ban·nə·‘ā·lîm.

וְהָיְתָ֣ה

wə·hā·yə·ṯāh

And there will be

מְסִלָּ֔ה

mə·sil·lāh,

לִשְׁאָ֣ר

liš·’ār

for the remnant

､ עַמּ֔וֹ

‘am·mōw,

of His people ､

אֲשֶׁ֥ר

’ă·šer

､ יִשָּׁאֵ֖ר

yiš·šā·’êr

will be left ､

מֵֽאַשּׁ֑וּר

mê·’aš·šūr;

כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

הָֽיְתָה֙

hā·yə·ṯāh

it was

לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

lə·yiś·rā·’êl,

בְּי֥וֹם

bə·yō·wm

in the day

עֲלֹת֖וֹ

‘ă·lō·ṯōw

that he came up

מֵאֶ֥רֶץ

mê·’e·reṣ

. מִצְרָֽיִם׃

miṣ·rā·yim.

of Egypt .
