A Prophecy about Damascus

מַשָּׂ֖א

maś·śā

The burden against

. דַּמָּ֑שֶׂק

dam·mā·śeq;

､ הִנֵּ֤ה

hin·nêh

דַמֶּ֙שֶׂק֙

ḏam·me·śeq

מוּסָ֣ר

mū·sār

will cease

､ מֵעִ֔יר

mê·‘îr,

from [being] a city ､

וְהָיְתָ֖ה

wə·hā·yə·ṯāh

and it will be

מְעִ֥י

mə·‘î

. מַפָּלָֽה׃

map·pā·lāh.

– עֲזֻב֖וֹת

‘ă·zu·ḇō·wṯ

[are] forsaken –

עָרֵ֣י

‘ā·rê

עֲרֹעֵ֑ר

‘ă·rō·‘êr;

､ לַעֲדָרִ֣ים

la·‘ă·ḏā·rîm

תִּֽהְיֶ֔ינָה

tih·ye·nāh,

they will be

､ וְרָבְצ֖וּ

wə·rā·ḇə·ṣū

and which lie down ､

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

and no one

. מַחֲרִֽיד׃

ma·ḥă·rîḏ.

will make [them] afraid .

וְנִשְׁבַּ֤ת

wə·niš·baṯ

And will cease

מִבְצָר֙

miḇ·ṣār

מֵֽאֶפְרַ֔יִם

mê·’ep̄·ra·yim,

וּמַמְלָכָ֥ה

ū·mam·lā·ḵāh

and the kingdom

מִדַּמֶּ֖שֶׂק

mid·dam·me·śeq

וּשְׁאָ֣ר

ū·šə·’ār

and the remnant

– אֲרָ֑ם

’ă·rām;

of Syria –

כִּכְב֤וֹד

kiḵ·ḇō·wḏ

as the glory

בְּנֵֽי־

bə·nê-

of the sons

､ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙

yiś·rā·’êl

of Israel ､

יִֽהְי֔וּ

yih·yū,

they will be

נְאֻ֖ם

nə·’um

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

. צְבָאֽוֹת׃

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ.

of hosts .

､ וְהָיָה֙

wə·hā·yāh

And it shall come to pass ､

בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

in day

הַה֔וּא

ha·hū,

､ יִדַּ֖ל

yid·dal

[That] will wane ､

כְּב֣וֹד

kə·ḇō·wḏ

יַעֲקֹ֑ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ;

וּמִשְׁמַ֥ן

ū·miš·man

and the fatness

בְּשָׂר֖וֹ

bə·śā·rōw

. יֵרָזֶֽה׃

yê·rā·zeh.

וְהָיָ֗ה

wə·hā·yāh,

And it shall be

כֶּֽאֱסֹף֙

ke·’ĕ·sōp̄

as when gathers

קָצִ֣יר

qā·ṣîr

､ קָמָ֔ה

qā·māh,

the grain ､

– וּזְרֹע֖וֹ

ū·zə·rō·‘ōw

and with his arm –

שִׁבֳּלִ֣ים

šib·bo·lîm

יִקְצ֑וֹר

yiq·ṣō·wr;

וְהָיָ֛ה

wə·hā·yāh

and it shall be

כִּמְלַקֵּ֥ט

kim·laq·qêṭ

as he who gathers

שִׁבֳּלִ֖ים

šib·bo·lîm

בְּעֵ֥מֶק

bə·‘ê·meq

in the Valley

. רְפָאִֽים׃

rə·p̄ā·’îm.

וְנִשְׁאַר־

wə·niš·’ar-

And yet will be left

בּ֤וֹ

bōw

in it

עֽוֹלֵלֹת֙

‘ō·w·lê·lōṯ

gleaning grapes

כְּנֹ֣קֶף

kə·nō·qep̄

Like the shaking

､ זַ֔יִת

za·yiṯ,

of an olive tree ､

שְׁנַ֧יִם

šə·na·yim

שְׁלֹשָׁ֛ה

šə·lō·šāh

[or] three

גַּרְגְּרִ֖ים

gar·gə·rîm

בְּרֹ֣אשׁ

bə·rōš

at the top

､ אָמִ֑יר

’ā·mîr;

of the uppermost bough ､

אַרְבָּעָ֣ה

’ar·bā·‘āh

חֲמִשָּׁ֗ה

ḥă·miš·šāh,

[or] five

בִּסְעִפֶ֙יהָ֙

bis·‘i·p̄e·hā

in its most branches

פֹּֽרִיָּ֔ה

pō·rî·yāh,

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהֵ֥י

’ĕ·lō·hê

. יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

yiś·rā·’êl.

בַּיּ֣וֹם

bay·yō·wm

In day

הַה֔וּא

ha·hū,

יִשְׁעֶ֥ה

yiš·‘eh

will look

הָאָדָ֖ם

hā·’ā·ḏām

עַל־

‘al-

to

､ עֹשֵׂ֑הוּ

‘ō·śê·hū;

וְעֵינָ֕יו

wə·‘ê·nāw

אֶל־

’el-

קְד֥וֹשׁ

qə·ḏō·wōš

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

yiś·rā·’êl

. תִּרְאֶֽינָה׃

tir·’e·nāh.

will have respect .

וְלֹ֣א

wə·lō

And not

יִשְׁעֶ֔ה

yiš·‘eh,

He will look

אֶל־

’el-

to

､ הַֽמִּזְבְּח֖וֹת

ham·miz·bə·ḥō·wṯ

the altars ､

מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה

ma·‘ă·śêh

the work

､ יָדָ֑יו

yā·ḏāw;

of his hands ､

וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר

wa·’ă·šer

and what

､ עָשׂ֤וּ

‘ā·śū

אֶצְבְּעֹתָיו֙

’eṣ·bə·‘ō·ṯāw

לֹ֣א

lō

not

יִרְאֶ֔ה

yir·’eh,

He will respect

､ וְהָאֲשֵׁרִ֖ים

wə·hā·’ă·šê·rîm

nor the wooden images ､

. וְהָחַמָּנִֽים׃

wə·hā·ḥam·mā·nîm.

nor the incense altars .

בַּיּ֨וֹם

bay·yō·wm

In day

הַה֜וּא

ha·hū

יִהְי֣וּ ׀

yih·yū

will be

עָרֵ֣י

‘ā·rê

מָעֻזּ֗וֹ

mā·‘uz·zōw,

כַּעֲזוּבַ֤ת

ka·‘ă·zū·ḇaṯ

､ הַחֹ֙רֶשׁ֙

ha·ḥō·reš

a bough ､

､ וְהָ֣אָמִ֔יר

wə·hā·’ā·mîr,

and an uppermost bough ､

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

עָזְב֔וּ

‘ā·zə·ḇū,

מִפְּנֵ֖י

mip·pə·nê

בְּנֵ֣י

bə·nê

of the sons

– יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

yiś·rā·’êl;

of Israel –

וְהָיְתָ֖ה

wə·hā·yə·ṯāh

and there will be

. שְׁמָמָֽה׃

šə·mā·māh.

כִּ֤י

kî

שָׁכַ֙חַתְּ֙

šā·ḵa·ḥat

you have forgotten

אֱלֹהֵ֣י

’ĕ·lō·hê

the God

､ יִשְׁעֵ֔ךְ

yiš·‘êḵ,

of your salvation ､

וְצ֥וּר

wə·ṣūr

and the Rock

､ מָעֻזֵּ֖ךְ

mā·‘uz·zêḵ

of your stronghold ､

לֹ֣א

lō

not

זָכָ֑רְתְּ

zā·ḵā·rət;

have been mindful

עַל־

‘al-

of

כֵּ֗ן

kên,

תִּטְּעִי֙

tiṭ·ṭə·‘î

､ נִטְעֵ֣י

niṭ·‘ê

נַעֲמָנִ֔ים

na·‘ă·mā·nîm,

– וּזְמֹ֥רַת

ū·zə·mō·raṯ

and seedlings –

זָ֖ר

zār

. תִּזְרָעֶֽנּוּ׃

tiz·rā·‘en·nū.

בְּי֤וֹם

bə·yō·wm

In the day

נִטְעֵךְ֙

niṭ·‘êḵ

､ תְּשַׂגְשֵׂ֔גִי

tə·śaḡ·śê·ḡî,

you will make to grow ､

וּבַבֹּ֖קֶר

ū·ḇab·bō·qer

and in the morning

זַרְעֵ֣ךְ

zar·‘êḵ

– תַּפְרִ֑יחִי

tap̄·rî·ḥî;

you will make to flourish –

נֵ֥ד

nêḏ

a heap of [ruins]

קָצִ֛יר

qā·ṣîr

[But] the harvest [will be]

בְּי֥וֹם

bə·yō·wm

in the day

נַחֲלָ֖ה

na·ḥă·lāh

וּכְאֵ֥ב

ū·ḵə·’êḇ

. אָנֽוּשׁ׃

’ā·nūš.

ה֗וֹי

hō·w,

הֲמוֹן֙

hă·mō·wn

to the multitude

､ עַמִּ֣ים

‘am·mîm

of people ､

רַבִּ֔ים

rab·bîm,

כַּהֲמ֥וֹת

ka·hă·mō·wṯ

[Who] make a noise

– יַמִּ֖ים

yam·mîm

the seas –

יֶהֱמָי֑וּן

ye·hĕ·mā·yūn;

וּשְׁא֣וֹן

ū·šə·’ō·wn

and to the rushing

､ לְאֻמִּ֔ים

lə·’um·mîm,

of nations ､

כִּשְׁא֛וֹן

kiš·’ō·wn

like the rushing

! מַ֥יִם

ma·yim

כַּבִּירִ֖ים

kab·bî·rîm

. יִשָּׁאֽוּן׃

yiš·šā·’ūn.

[That] make a rushing .

לְאֻמִּ֗ים

lə·’um·mîm,

כִּשְׁא֞וֹן

kiš·’ō·wn

like the rushing

､ מַ֤יִם

ma·yim

of waters ､

רַבִּים֙

rab·bîm

יִשָּׁא֔וּן

yiš·šā·’ūn,

will rush

וְגָ֥עַר

wə·ḡā·‘ar

but [God] will rebuke

בּ֖וֹ

bōw

וְנָ֣ס

wə·nās

and they will flee

､ מִמֶּרְחָ֑ק

mim·mer·ḥāq;

וְרֻדַּ֗ף

wə·rud·dap̄,

and be chased

כְּמֹ֤ץ

kə·mōṣ

הָרִים֙

hā·rîm

of the mountains

לִפְנֵי־

lip̄·nê-

､ ר֔וּחַ

rū·aḥ,

the wind ､

וּכְגַלְגַּ֖ל

ū·ḵə·ḡal·gal

and Like a rolling thing

לִפְנֵ֥י

lip̄·nê

. סוּפָֽה׃

sū·p̄āh.

the whirlwind .

לְעֵ֥ת

lə·‘êṯ

At

עֶ֙רֶב֙

‘e·reḇ

וְהִנֵּ֣ה

wə·hin·nêh

– בַלָּהָ֔ה

ḇal·lā·hāh,

בְּטֶ֥רֶם

bə·ṭe·rem

[And] before

בֹּ֖קֶר

bō·qer

. אֵינֶ֑נּוּ

’ê·nen·nū;

he [is] no more .

זֶ֚ה

zeh

This [is]

חֵ֣לֶק

ḥê·leq

שׁוֹסֵ֔ינוּ

šō·w·sê·nū,

of those who plunder us

וְגוֹרָ֖ל

wə·ḡō·w·rāl

and the lot

. לְבֹזְזֵֽינוּ׃

lə·ḇō·zə·zê·nū.

of those who rob us .
