The Blessed Death of the Righteous

הַצַּדִּ֣יק

haṣ·ṣad·dîq

､ אָבָ֔ד

’ā·ḇāḏ,

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

and no

אִ֖ישׁ

’îš

שָׂ֣ם

śām

takes [it]

עַל־

‘al-

to

– לֵ֑ב

lêḇ;

וְאַנְשֵׁי־

wə·’an·šê-

and men

חֶ֤סֶד

ḥe·seḏ

､ נֶֽאֱסָפִים֙

ne·’ĕ·sā·p̄îm

[are] taken away ､

בְּאֵ֣ין

bə·’ên

מֵבִ֔ין

mê·ḇîn,

כִּֽי־

kî-

מִפְּנֵ֥י

mip·pə·nê

הָרָעָ֖ה

hā·rā·‘āh

נֶאֱסַ֥ף

ne·’ĕ·sap̄

. הַצַּדִּֽיק׃

haṣ·ṣad·dîq.

the righteous .

יָב֣וֹא

yā·ḇō·w

– שָׁל֔וֹם

šā·lō·wm,

יָנ֖וּחוּ

yā·nū·ḥū

they shall rest

עַל־

‘al-

in

､ מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָ֑ם

miš·kə·ḇō·w·ṯām;

הֹלֵ֖ךְ

hō·lêḵ

[Each one] walking

. נְכֹחֽוֹ׃

nə·ḵō·ḥōw.

[in] his uprightness .

God Condemns Idolatry

וְאַתֶּ֥ם

wə·’at·tem

But You

קִרְבוּ־

qir·ḇū-

､ הֵ֖נָּה

hên·nāh

here ､

בְּנֵ֣י

bə·nê

､ עֹנְנָ֑ה

‘ō·nə·nāh;

of the sorceress ､

זֶ֥רַע

ze·ra‘

מְנָאֵ֖ף

mə·nā·’êp̄

of the adulterer

. וַתִּזְנֶֽה׃

wat·tiz·neh.

and the harlot .

עַל־

‘al-

מִי֙

mî

؟ תִּתְעַנָּ֔גוּ

tiṯ·‘an·nā·ḡū,

do you ridicule ؟

עַל־

‘al-

מִ֛י

mî

תַּרְחִ֥יבוּ

tar·ḥî·ḇū

do you make a wide

､ פֶ֖ה

p̄eh

תַּאֲרִ֣יכוּ

ta·’ă·rî·ḵū

[And] stick out

؟ לָשׁ֑וֹן

lā·šō·wn;

the tongue ؟

הֲלֽוֹא־

hă·lō·w-

[Are] not

אַתֶּ֥ם

’at·tem

יִלְדֵי־

yil·ḏê-

､ פֶ֖שַׁע

p̄e·ša‘

of transgression ､

זֶ֥רַע

ze·ra‘

､ שָֽׁקֶר׃

šā·qer.

of falsehood ､

הַנֵּֽחָמִים֙

han·nê·ḥā·mîm

Inflaming yourselves

בָּֽאֵלִ֔ים

bā·’ê·lîm,

with the oaks

תַּ֖חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

כָּל־

kāl-

､ עֵ֣ץ

‘êṣ

tree ､

רַעֲנָ֑ן

ra·‘ă·nān;

שֹׁחֲטֵ֤י

šō·ḥă·ṭê

הַיְלָדִים֙

hay·lā·ḏîm

the sons

בַּנְּחָלִ֔ים

ban·nə·ḥā·lîm,

in the valleys

תַּ֖חַת

ta·ḥaṯ

סְעִפֵ֥י

sə·‘i·p̄ê

؟ הַסְּלָעִֽים׃

has·sə·lā·‘îm.

of the rocks ؟

בְּחַלְּקֵי־

bə·ḥal·lə·qê-

Among the smooth [stones]

נַ֣חַל

na·ḥal

of the stream

– חֶלְקֵ֔ךְ

ḥel·qêḵ,

[Is] your portion –

､ הֵ֥ם

hêm

they ､

הֵ֖ם

hêm

– גּוֹרָלֵ֑ךְ

gō·w·rā·lêḵ;

גַּם־

gam-

לָהֶ֞ם

lā·hem

שָׁפַ֥כְתְּ

šā·p̄aḵt

you have poured

､ נֶ֙סֶךְ֙

ne·seḵ

a drink offering ､

הֶעֱלִ֣ית

he·‘ĕ·lîṯ

You have offered

. מִנְחָ֔ה

min·ḥāh,

a grain offering .

הַ֥עַל

ha·‘al

In

אֵ֖לֶּה

’êl·leh

؟ אֶנָּחֵֽם׃

’en·nā·ḥêm.

Should I receive comfort ؟

עַ֤ל

‘al

On

הַר־

har-

גָּבֹ֙הַּ֙

gā·ḇō·ah

וְנִשָּׂ֔א

wə·niś·śā,

and high

שַׂ֖מְתְּ

śamt

. מִשְׁכָּבֵ֑ךְ

miš·kā·ḇêḵ;

גַּם־

gam-

שָׁ֥ם

šām

עָלִ֖ית

‘ā·lîṯ

לִזְבֹּ֥חַ

liz·bō·aḥ

. זָֽבַח׃

zā·ḇaḥ.

וְאַחַ֤ר

wə·’a·ḥar

הַדֶּ֙לֶת֙

had·de·leṯ

וְהַמְּזוּזָ֔ה

wə·ham·mə·zū·zāh,

and their posts

שַׂ֖מְתְּ

śamt

You have set up

– זִכְרוֹנֵ֑ךְ

ziḵ·rō·w·nêḵ;

your remembrance –

כִּ֣י

kî

מֵאִתִּ֞י

mê·’it·tî

גִּלִּ֣ית

gil·lîṯ

you have uncovered yourself [to those other]

– וַֽתַּעֲלִ֗י

wat·ta·‘ă·lî,

and have gone up to them –

הִרְחַ֤בְתְּ

hir·ḥaḇt

You have enlarged

､ מִשְׁכָּבֵךְ֙

miš·kā·ḇêḵ

וַתִּכְרָת־

wat·tiḵ·rāṯ-

and made [a covenant]

לָ֣ךְ

lāḵ

with

מֵהֶ֔ם

mê·hem,

אָהַ֥בְתְּ

’ā·haḇt

מִשְׁכָּבָ֖ם

miš·kā·ḇām

יָ֥ד

yāḏ

. חָזִֽית׃

ḥā·zîṯ.

you saw [their] nudity .

וַתָּשֻׁ֤רִי

wat·tā·šu·rî

לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙

lam·me·leḵ

to the king

､ בַּשֶּׁ֔מֶן

baš·še·men,

with ointment ､

וַתַּרְבִּ֖י

wat·tar·bî

､ רִקֻּחָ֑יִךְ

riq·qu·ḥā·yiḵ;

your perfumes ､

וַתְּשַׁלְּחִ֤י

wat·tə·šal·lə·ḥî

צִרַ֙יִךְ֙

ṣi·rayḵ

your messengers

､ עַד־

‘aḏ-

even to ､

מֵ֣רָחֹ֔ק

mê·rā·ḥōq,

וַתַּשְׁפִּ֖ילִי

wat·taš·pî·lî

and [even] descended

עַד־

‘aḏ-

to

. שְׁאֽוֹל׃

šə·’ō·wl.

בְּרֹ֤ב

bə·rōḇ

In the length

– דַּרְכֵּךְ֙

dar·kêḵ

of your way –

יָגַ֔עַתְּ

yā·ḡa·‘at,

You are wearied

､ לֹ֥א

lō

not ､

אָמַ֖רְתְּ

’ā·mart

[Yet] you did say

– נוֹאָ֑שׁ

nō·w·’āš;

there is no hope –

חַיַּ֤ת

ḥay·yaṯ

the life

– יָדֵךְ֙

yā·ḏêḵ

of your hand –

מָצָ֔את

mā·ṣāṯ,

עַל־

‘al-

כֵּ֖ן

kên

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. חָלִֽית׃

ḥā·lîṯ.

you were grieved .

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

And

מִ֞י

mî

[of] whom

דָּאַ֤גְתְּ

dā·’aḡt

have you been afraid

､ וַתִּֽירְאִי֙

wat·tî·rə·’î

or feared ､

כִּ֣י

kî

､ תְכַזֵּ֔בִי

ṯə·ḵaz·zê·ḇî,

you have lied ､

וְאוֹתִי֙

wə·’ō·w·ṯî

and Me

לֹ֣א

lō

not

זָכַ֔רְתְּ

zā·ḵart,

לֹא־

lō-

שַׂ֖מְתְּ

śamt

taken [it]

עַל־

‘al-

to

؟ לִבֵּ֑ךְ

lib·bêḵ;

הֲלֹ֨א

hă·lō

is it not

אֲנִ֤י

’ă·nî

מַחְשֶׁה֙

maḥ·šeh

have held My peace

､ וּמֵ֣עֹלָ֔ם

ū·mê·‘ō·lām,

and from of old ､

וְאוֹתִ֖י

wə·’ō·w·ṯî

לֹ֥א

lō

not

؟ תִירָֽאִי׃

ṯî·rā·’î.

you do fear ؟

אֲנִ֥י

’ă·nî

I

אַגִּ֖יד

’ag·gîḏ

､ צִדְקָתֵ֑ךְ

ṣiḏ·qā·ṯêḵ;

your righteousness ､

וְאֶֽת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

– מַעֲשַׂ֖יִךְ

ma·‘ă·śa·yiḵ

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

for not

. יוֹעִילֽוּךְ׃

yō·w·‘î·lūḵ.

they will profit you .

､ בְּזַֽעֲקֵךְ֙

bə·za·‘ă·qêḵ

When you cry out ､

יַצִּילֻ֣ךְ

yaṣ·ṣî·luḵ

let deliver you

קִבּוּצַ֔יִךְ

qib·bū·ṣa·yiḵ,

your collection [of idols]

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

but

כֻּלָּ֥ם

kul·lām

יִשָּׂא־

yiś·śā-

will carry away

ר֖וּחַ

rū·aḥ

the wind

יִקַּח־

yiq·qaḥ-

will take [them]

הָ֑בֶל

hā·ḇel;

וְהַחוֹסֶ֥ה

wə·ha·ḥō·w·seh

but he who puts his trust

בִי֙

ḇî

in Me

יִנְחַל־

yin·ḥal-

､ אֶ֔רֶץ

’e·reṣ,

the land ､

וְיִירַ֖שׁ

wə·yî·raš

and shall inherit

– הַר־

har-

. קָדְשִֽׁי׃

qāḏ·šî

My holy .

Healing for the Repentant

､ וְאָמַ֥ר

wə·’ā·mar

And one shall say ､

סֹֽלּוּ־

sōl·lū-

Heap it up

､ סֹ֖לּוּ

sōl·lū

Heap it up ､

פַּנּוּ־

pan·nū-

､ דָ֑רֶךְ

ḏā·reḵ;

the way ､

הָרִ֥ימוּ

hā·rî·mū

מִכְשׁ֖וֹל

miḵ·šō·wl

the stumbling block

מִדֶּ֥רֶךְ

mid·de·reḵ

out of the way

. עַמִּֽי׃

‘am·mî.

of My people .

the High

וְנִשָּׂ֗א

wə·niś·śā,

שֹׁכֵ֥ן

– וְקָד֣וֹשׁ

wə·qā·ḏō·wōš

and Holy –

שְׁמ֔וֹ

šə·mōw,

whose name [is]

מָר֥וֹם

mā·rō·wm

in the high

וְקָד֖וֹשׁ

wə·qā·ḏō·wōš

and holy [place]

אֶשְׁכּ֑וֹן

’eš·kō·wn;

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and with

דַּכָּא֙

dak·kā

him [who] has a contrite

וּשְׁפַל־

ū·šə·p̄al-

､ ר֔וּחַ

rū·aḥ,

לְהַחֲיוֹת֙

lə·ha·ḥă·yō·wṯ

ר֣וּחַ

rū·aḥ

､ שְׁפָלִ֔ים

šə·p̄ā·lîm,

of the humble ､

וּֽלְהַחֲי֖וֹת

ū·lə·ha·ḥă·yō·wṯ

and to revive

לֵ֥ב

lêḇ

. נִדְכָּאִֽים׃

niḏ·kā·’îm.

of the contrite ones .

כִּ֣י

kî

לֹ֤א

lō

not

､ לְעוֹלָם֙

lə·‘ō·w·lām

אָרִ֔יב

’ā·rîḇ,

I will contend

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

לָנֶ֖צַח

lā·ne·ṣaḥ

אֶקְּצ֑וֹף

’eq·qə·ṣō·wp̄;

will I be angry

כִּי־

kî-

ר֙וּחַ֙

rū·aḥ

מִלְּפָנַ֣י

mil·lə·p̄ā·nay

יַֽעֲט֔וֹף

ya·‘ă·ṭō·wp̄,

וּנְשָׁמ֖וֹת

ū·nə·šā·mō·wṯ

and the souls

אֲנִ֥י

’ă·nî

. עָשִֽׂיתִי׃

‘ā·śî·ṯî.

בַּעֲוֺ֥ן

ba·‘ă·wōn

For the iniquity

בִּצְע֛וֹ

biṣ·‘ōw

of his covetousness

､ קָצַ֥פְתִּי

qā·ṣap̄·tî

I was angry ､

וְאַכֵּ֖הוּ

wə·’ak·kê·hū

הַסְתֵּ֣ר

has·têr

､ וְאֶקְצֹ֑ף

wə·’eq·ṣōp̄;

and was angry ､

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ

way·yê·leḵ

and he went on

שׁוֹבָ֖ב

šō·w·ḇāḇ

בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ

bə·ḏe·reḵ

in the way

. לִבּֽוֹ׃

lib·bōw.

､ דְּרָכָ֥יו

də·rā·ḵāw

רָאִ֖יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî

וְאֶרְפָּאֵ֑הוּ

wə·’er·pā·’ê·hū;

and will heal him

וְאַנְחֵ֕הוּ

wə·’an·ḥê·hū

and I will lead him

וַאֲשַׁלֵּ֧ם

wa·’ă·šal·lêm

נִֽחֻמִ֛ים

ni·ḥu·mîm

ל֖וֹ

lōw

to him

. וְלַאֲבֵלָֽיו׃

wə·la·’ă·ḇê·lāw.

and to his mourners .

בּוֹרֵ֖א

bō·w·rê

[נוב]

nūḇ

-

(נִ֣יב)

nîḇ

the fruit of

– שְׂפָתָ֑יִם

śə·p̄ā·ṯā·yim;

the lips –

､ שָׁל֨וֹם ׀

šā·lō·wm

שָׁל֜וֹם

šā·lō·wm

､ לָרָח֧וֹק

lā·rā·ḥō·wq

to [him who is] far off ､

､ וְלַקָּר֛וֹב

wə·laq·qā·rō·wḇ

and to [him who is] near ､

אָמַ֥ר

’ā·mar

– יְהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

. וּרְפָאתִֽיו׃

ū·rə·p̄ā·ṯîw.

and I will heal him .

וְהָרְשָׁעִ֖ים

wə·hā·rə·šā·‘îm

But the wicked [are]

､ כַּיָּ֣ם

kay·yām

like the sea ､

נִגְרָ֑שׁ

niḡ·rāš;

כִּ֤י

kî

､ הַשְׁקֵט֙

haš·qêṭ

rest ､

לֹ֣א

lō

יוּכָ֔ל

yū·ḵāl,

it

וַיִּגְרְשׁ֥וּ

way·yiḡ·rə·šū

and cast up

מֵימָ֖יו

mê·māw

רֶ֥פֶשׁ

re·p̄eš

. וָטִֽיט׃

wā·ṭîṭ.

and dirt .

אֵ֣ין

’ên

[There is] no

､ שָׁל֔וֹם

šā·lō·wm,

אָמַ֥ר

’ā·mar

､ אֱלֹהַ֖י

’ĕ·lō·hay

my God ､

. לָרְשָׁעִֽים׃

lā·rə·šā·‘îm.

for the wicked .
