A Ruler from Bethlehem

עַתָּה֙

‘at·tāh

､ תִּתְגֹּדְדִ֣י

tiṯ·gō·ḏə·ḏî

gather yourself in troops ､

בַת־

ḇaṯ-

– גְּד֔וּד

gə·ḏūḏ,

of troops –

מָצ֖וֹר

mā·ṣō·wr

שָׂ֣ם

śām

עָלֵ֑ינוּ

‘ā·lê·nū;

בַּשֵּׁ֙בֶט֙

baš·šê·ḇeṭ

with a rod

יַכּ֣וּ

yak·kū

they will strike

עַֽל־

‘al-

on

. הַלְּחִ֔י

hal·lə·ḥî,

the cheek .

אֵ֖ת

’êṯ

-

שֹׁפֵ֥ט

šō·p̄êṭ

. יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

yiś·rā·’êl.

､ וְאַתָּ֞ה

wə·’at·tāh

But you ､

בֵּֽית־

bêṯ-

in

לֶ֣חֶם

le·ḥem

､ אֶפְרָ֗תָה

’ep̄·rā·ṯāh,

צָעִיר֙

ṣā·‘îr

לִֽהְיוֹת֙

lih·yō·wṯ

[Though] you are

בְּאַלְפֵ֣י

bə·’al·p̄ê

among the thousands

､ יְהוּדָ֔ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

of Judah ､

מִמְּךָ֙

mim·mə·ḵā

[Yet] out of you

לִ֣י

lî

to Me

יֵצֵ֔א

yê·ṣê,

shall come forth

לִֽהְי֥וֹת

lih·yō·wṯ

the one to be

מוֹשֵׁ֖ל

mō·wō·šêl

– בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

bə·yiś·rā·’êl;

in Israel –

וּמוֹצָאֹתָ֥יו

ū·mō·w·ṣā·’ō·ṯāw

and Whose goings forth [are]

､ מִקֶּ֖דֶם

miq·qe·ḏem

from of old ､

מִימֵ֥י

mî·mê

. עוֹלָֽם׃

‘ō·w·lām.

לָכֵ֣ן

lā·ḵên

､ יִתְּנֵ֔ם

yit·tə·nêm,

He shall give them up ､

עַד־

‘aḏ-

עֵ֥ת

‘êṯ

the time

יוֹלֵדָ֖ה

yō·w·lê·ḏāh

[that] she who is in labor

– יָלָ֑דָה

yā·lā·ḏāh;

has given birth –

וְיֶ֣תֶר

wə·ye·ṯer

and the remnant

אֶחָ֔יו

’e·ḥāw,

of His brothers

יְשׁוּב֖וּן

yə·šū·ḇūn

עַל־

‘al-

to

בְּנֵ֥י

bə·nê

the sons

. יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

yiś·rā·’êl.

וְעָמַ֗ד

wə·‘ā·maḏ,

And He shall stand

וְרָעָה֙

wə·rā·‘āh

and feed [His flock]

בְּעֹ֣ז

bə·‘ōz

in the strength of

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

בִּגְא֕וֹן

biḡ·’ō·wn

in the majesty

שֵׁ֖ם

šêm

of the name of

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

– אֱלֹהָ֑יו

’ĕ·lō·hāw;

､ וְיָשָׁ֕בוּ

wə·yā·šā·ḇū

and they shall abide ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

עַתָּ֥ה

‘at·tāh

יִגְדַּ֖ל

yiḡ·dal

He shall be great

עַד־

‘aḏ-

to

אַפְסֵי־

’ap̄·sê-

the ends

. אָֽרֶץ׃

’ā·reṣ.

of the earth .

וְהָיָ֥ה

wə·hā·yāh

And shall be

זֶ֖ה

zeh

､ שָׁל֑וֹם

šā·lō·wm;

אַשּׁ֣וּר ׀

’aš·šūr

כִּֽי־

kî-

יָב֣וֹא

yā·ḇō·w

､ בְאַרְצֵ֗נוּ

ḇə·’ar·ṣê·nū,

into our land ､

וְכִ֤י

wə·ḵî

and when

יִדְרֹךְ֙

yiḏ·rōḵ

､ בְּאַרְמְנֹתֵ֔ינוּ

bə·’ar·mə·nō·ṯê·nū,

in our palaces ､

וַהֲקֵמֹ֤נוּ

wa·hă·qê·mō·nū

and we will raise

עָלָיו֙

‘ā·lāw

שִׁבְעָ֣ה

šiḇ·‘āh

､ רֹעִ֔ים

rō·‘îm,

וּשְׁמֹנָ֖ה

ū·šə·mō·nāh

נְסִיכֵ֥י

nə·sî·ḵê

. אָדָֽם׃

’ā·ḏām.

וְרָע֞וּ

wə·rā·‘ū

And they shall waste

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

אֶ֤רֶץ

’e·reṣ

the land

אַשּׁוּר֙

’aš·šūr

､ בַּחֶ֔רֶב

ba·ḥe·reḇ,

with the sword ､

וְאֶת־

wə·’eṯ-

and

אֶ֥רֶץ

’e·reṣ

the land

נִמְרֹ֖ד

nim·rōḏ

בִּפְתָחֶ֑יהָ

bip̄·ṯā·ḥe·hā;

at its entrances

וְהִצִּיל֙

wə·hiṣ·ṣîl

thus He shall deliver [us]

､ מֵֽאַשּׁ֔וּר

mê·’aš·šūr,

from Assyria ､

כִּֽי־

kî-

יָב֣וֹא

yā·ḇō·w

､ בְאַרְצֵ֔נוּ

ḇə·’ar·ṣê·nū,

into our land ､

וְכִ֥י

wə·ḵî

and when

יִדְרֹ֖ךְ

yiḏ·rōḵ

. בִּגְבוּלֵֽנוּ׃

biḡ·ḇū·lê·nū.

within our borders .

וְהָיָ֣ה ׀

wə·hā·yāh

And shall be

שְׁאֵרִ֣ית

šə·’ê·rîṯ

יַעֲקֹ֗ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ,

בְּקֶ֙רֶב֙

bə·qe·reḇ

in the midst

עַמִּ֣ים

‘am·mîm

רַבִּ֔ים

rab·bîm,

כְּטַל֙

kə·ṭal

מֵאֵ֣ת

mê·’êṯ

､ יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

כִּרְבִיבִ֖ים

kir·ḇî·ḇîm

עֲלֵי־

‘ă·lê-

on

､ עֵ֑שֶׂב

‘ê·śeḇ;

the grass ､

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

לֹֽא־

lō-

no

יְקַוֶּה֙

yə·qaw·weh

､ לְאִ֔ישׁ

lə·’îš,

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

יְיַחֵ֖ל

yə·ya·ḥêl

לִבְנֵ֥י

liḇ·nê

. אָדָֽם׃

’ā·ḏām.

of men .

וְהָיָה֩

wə·hā·yāh

And shall be

שְׁאֵרִ֨ית

šə·’ê·rîṯ

יַעֲקֹ֜ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ

בַּגּוֹיִ֗ם

bag·gō·w·yim,

among the Gentiles

בְּקֶ֙רֶב֙

bə·qe·reḇ

in the midst

עַמִּ֣ים

‘am·mîm

רַבִּ֔ים

rab·bîm,

כְּאַרְיֵה֙

kə·’ar·yêh

בְּבַהֲמ֣וֹת

bə·ḇa·hă·mō·wṯ

among the beasts

､ יַ֔עַר

ya·‘ar,

of the forest ､

כִּכְפִ֖יר

kiḵ·p̄îr

Like a young lion

בְּעֶדְרֵי‪‬‪‬

bə·‘eḏ·rê-

､ צֹ֑אן

ṣōn;

of sheep ､

､ אֲשֶׁ֧ר

’ă·šer

who ､

אִם

’im

if

､ עָבַ֛ר

‘ā·ḇar

he passes through ､

､ וְרָמַ֥ס

wə·rā·mas

and both treads down ､

､ וְטָרַ֖ף

wə·ṭā·rap̄

and tears in pieces ､

וְאֵ֥ין

wə·’ên

and none

. מַצִּֽיל׃

maṣ·ṣîl.

תָּרֹ֥ם

tā·rōm

Shall be lifted

יָדְךָ֖

yā·ḏə·ḵā

עַל־

‘al-

､ צָרֶ֑יךָ

ṣā·re·ḵā;

your adversaries ､

וְכָל־

wə·ḵāl

and all

אֹיְבֶ֖יךָ

’ō·yə·ḇe·ḵā

. יִכָּרֵֽתוּ׃

yik·kā·rê·ṯū.

shall be cut off .

וְהָיָ֤ה

wə·hā·yāh

And it shall be

､ בַיּוֹם־

ḇay·yō·wm-

in day ､

הַהוּא֙

ha·hū

נְאֻם־

nə·’um-

､ יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י

wə·hiḵ·rat·tî

that I will cut off

סוּסֶ֖יךָ

sū·se·ḵā

מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ

miq·qir·be·ḵā;

from your midst

וְהַאֲבַדְתִּ֖י

wə·ha·’ă·ḇaḏ·tî

. מַרְכְּבֹתֶֽיךָ׃

mar·kə·ḇō·ṯe·ḵā.

your chariots .

וְהִכְרַתִּ֖י

wə·hiḵ·rat·tî

And I will cut off

עָרֵ֣י

‘ā·rê

､ אַרְצֶ֑ךָ

’ar·ṣe·ḵā;

of your land ､

וְהָרַסְתִּ֖י

wə·hā·ras·tî

כָּל־

kāl-

. מִבְצָרֶֽיךָ׃

miḇ·ṣā·re·ḵā.

your strongholds .

וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י

wə·hiḵ·rat·tî

And I will cut off

כְשָׁפִ֖ים

ḵə·šā·p̄îm

– מִיָּדֶ֑ךָ

mî·yā·ḏe·ḵā;

from your hand –

– וּֽמְעוֹנְנִ֖ים

ū·mə·‘ō·wn·nîm

and soothsayers –

לֹ֥א

lō

no

יִֽהְיוּ־

yih·yū-

. לָֽךְ׃

lāḵ.

､ וְהִכְרַתִּ֧י

wə·hiḵ·rat·tî

And I will cut off ､

פְסִילֶ֛יךָ

p̄ə·sî·le·ḵā

Your carved images

וּמַצֵּבוֹתֶ֖יךָ

ū·maṣ·ṣê·ḇō·w·ṯe·ḵā

and your sacred pillars

מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ

miq·qir·be·ḵā;

from your midst

וְלֹֽא־

wə·lō-

and no

תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֥ה

ṯiš·ta·ḥă·weh

You shall worship

ע֖וֹד

‘ō·wḏ

לְמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה

lə·ma·‘ă·śêh

the work

. יָדֶֽיךָ׃

yā·ḏe·ḵā.

of your hands .

וְנָתַשְׁתִּ֥י

wə·nā·ṯaš·tî

And I will pluck

אֲשֵׁירֶ֖יךָ

’ă·šê·re·ḵā

your wooden images

מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ

miq·qir·be·ḵā;

from your midst

וְהִשְׁמַדְתִּ֖י

wə·hiš·maḏ·tî

thus I will destroy

. עָרֶֽיךָ׃

‘ā·re·ḵā.

וְעָשִׂ֜יתִי

wə·‘ā·śî·ṯî

And I will execute

בְּאַ֧ף

bə·’ap̄

וּבְחֵמָ֛ה

ū·ḇə·ḥê·māh

and fury

נָקָ֖ם

nā·qām

אֶת־

’eṯ-

On

､ הַגּוֹיִ֑ם

hag·gō·w·yim;

the nations ､

אֲשֶׁ֖ר

’ă·šer

לֹ֥א

lō

not

. שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃

šā·mê·‘ū.
