Matthew 27:45-56 - Jesus Dies On The Cross

Matthew 27:45-56

45 Now from the sixth hour to the ninth there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani," that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

47 And some of them that stood by, hearing Him, said, He calls upon Elias:

48 and immediately one of them ran, and took a spunge, and having filled it with vinegar put it upon a reed, and offered it Him to drink; 49 the rest said, Stay, let us see whether Elias will come and save Him.

50 But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice; and then gave up the ghost. 51 And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split: 52 and the graves opened, and many bodies of departed saints arose, 53 and coming out of the graves, after his resurrection, went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

54 And when the centurion, and they that were with him guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake, and what was done, they were sore afraid, and said, This was indeed the Son of God.

55 And several women were there looking on at a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministring unto Him: 56 among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.

Mark 15:33-41

33 Now at the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole land, until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani," which is being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

35 And some of them that stood by hearing it, said, Behold He calleth upon Elias. 36 And there ran one, and filled a spunge with vinegar, and putting it on a reed offered it Him to drink, saying, Let Him alone, let us see whether Elias will come to take Him down.

37 But Jesus cried with a loud voice and expired. 38 And the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom. 39 And when the centurion, that stood over against Him, saw that He expired with such a cry, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

40 There were also women at a distance looking on: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; 41 who also when He was in Galilee, followed Him and waited on Him: and several others who came up to Jerusalem with Him.

Luke 23:44-49

44 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land till the ninth hour. 45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And Jesus cried with a loud voice and said, Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit. And when He had said thus, He expired.

47 And when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this man was righteous. 48 And all the multitudes that came together to this affecting sight, seeing what happened, smote on their breasts and returned. 49 And all his acquaintance stood at a distance, and the women that followed Him from Galilee, beholding these things.

John 19:28-37

28 After this Jesus knowing that all things were now finished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel there full of vinegar: so they filled a spunge with the vinegar, and putting it upon hyssop, held it up to his mouth.

30 And when Jesus had received the vinegar, He said, It is finished. And reclining his head, He yielded up the ghost.

31 The Jews therefore, that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath-day, because it was now the preparation, (for that sabbath-day was an high-day) desired Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with Him. But coming to Jesus, 33 as they saw He was dead already, they did not break his legs: 34 but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it testifieth it, and his testimony is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye may believe. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture might be fulfilled, Not a bone of Him shall be broken. 37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on Him whom they have pierced.
