John 11:1-16 - Lazarus Dies
Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus, of Bethany, the village of Mary and Martha her sister. 2 It was the Mary that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 Therefore his sisters sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
But when Jesus heard it, he said: This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that by it the Son of God may be glorified. 5 Now, Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6 When, therefore, he heard that he was sick, he still remained two days in the place where he was. 7 Then after this, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.
His disciples said to him: Rabbi, the Jews just now sought to stone thee, and art thou going thither again?
Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walks during the day,, he does not stumble, for he sees the light of this world. 10 But if any one walks in the night, he stumbles, be cause there is no light in him. 11 Thus spoke he; and after this he said to them: Our friend Lazarus sleeps; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
Then his disciples said: Lord, if he sleeps, he will be saved.
Jesus spoke of his death; but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. 14 Therefore, Jesus then said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead. 15 And I rejoice, on your account, that I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him.
Then Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow-disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.
