Matthew 16:13-20 - Peter's Confession At Caesarea Philippi

Matthew 16:13-20

13 When Jesus reached the district of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"

14 They answered, "Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

15 He said to them, "Who do you yourselves say that I am?"

16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

17 Then Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for it is not man that made this known to you, but my Father in heaven. 18 And I, yes I, tell you, your name from now on is to be Peter, Rock, and on a massive rock like this I will build my church, and the powers of the underworld shall never overthrow it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you forbid on earth must be what is already forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth must be what is already permitted in heaven."

20 Then He admonished the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ.

Mark 8:27-30

27 Then Jesus and His disciples left Galilee and went to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way there He was asking His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"

28 They answered Him, "John the Baptist; others say, Elijah, and others that you are one of the prophets."

29 Then He began to ask them, "Who do you yourselves say that I am?" Peter answered Him, "You are the Christ."

30 But He strictly warned them not to tell this about Him to anybody.
