Matthew 12:1-8 - Plucking Grain On The Sabbath

¹ At that time Jesus went on the sabbath through the grainfields; and his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the ears of grain, and to eat. ² But the Pharisees, seeing it, said to him, Lo! thy disciples are doing that which it is not lawful to do on the sabbath.

³ But he said to them, Have ye not read what David did, when he and those who were with him were hungry? ⁴ how he went into the house of God, and they ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but for the priests alone? ⁵ Or have ye not read in the Law, that on the sabbaths the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? ⁶ But I say to you, that something greater than the temple is here. ⁷ But if ye had known what this meaneth, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice," ye would not have condemned the guiltless. ⁸ For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.

²³ And it came to pass, that he was going through the grainfields on the sabbath, and his disciples began, as they went along, to pluck the ears of grain. ²⁴ And the Pharisees said to him, See, why are they doing on the sabbath that which is not lawful?

²⁵ And he saith to them, Did ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, himself and they who were with him? ²⁶ how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the highpriest, and ate the showbread, which it is lawful for none but the priests to eat, and gave also to those who were with him? ²⁷ And he said to them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. ²⁸ So that the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.

¹ And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he was going through grainfields; and his disciples plucked the ears of grain, and ate them, rubbing them with their hands. ² And some of the Pharisees said, Why are ye doing that which it is not lawful to do on the sabbath?

³ And Jesus answering them, said, Have ye not even read what David did, when he was himself hungry, and they who were with him? ⁴ how he went into the house of God, and took and ate the showbread, and gave it also to those who were with him, which it is not lawful for any to eat but the priests alone? ⁵ And he said to them, The Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.
