John 11:45-57 - The Jewish Leaders Plot To Kill Jesus
45 Many of the Jews therefore who had come to Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him. 46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus had done.
47 Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What are we to do, seeing that this man worketh many signs? 48 If we thus let him alone, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away both our place and nation.
49 And a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being highpriest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing at all; 50 nor do ye consider that it is expedient for us that one man die for the people, and not the whole nation perish. 51 And this he spoke not from himself; but being highpriest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation; 52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together in one body the children of God that are scattered abroad. 53 Therefore from that day forth they consulted together to put him to death. 54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but departed thence to the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there abode with the disciples.
55 And the passover of the Jews was at hand; and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. 56 They sought therefore for Jesus, and said one to another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? that he will not come to the feast? 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders, that, if any one knew where he was, he should give information, that they might seize him.
