one of the gods worshipped by the people of Sepharvaim, who colonized Samaria (2Ki 17:31). The name means "Anu is king." It was a female deity representing the moon, as Adrammelech (q.v.) was the male representing the sun.

Hastings
A god worshipped by captives transplanted from Sepharvaim to Samaria by the Assyrians (2Ki 17:24). As human sacrifice (2Ki 17:31) was the most prominent rite connected with the god's worship, the name, which might be interpreted as meaning 'Anu is prince,' in all probability owes its origin to a scribal endeavour to identify the god with Molech, in whose cult a similar practice existed.
