in the shadow of God; i.e., "under his protection", the artificer who executed the work of art in connection with the tabernacle in the wilderness (Ex 31:2; 35:30). He was engaged principally in works of metal, wood, and stone; while Aholiab, who was associated with him and subordinate to him, had the charge of the textile fabrics (Ex 36:1-2; 38:22). He was of the tribe of Judah, the son of Uri, and grandson of Hur (Ex 31:2). Mention is made in Ezr 10:30 of another of the same name.

1. Son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, filled with the Spirit of God to work all manner of workmanship in metal, wood, and stone for the tabernacle (Ex 31:1-6), as Aholiab wrought in textile fabrics. Bezaleel was the principal, Aholiab the subordinate (Ex 36:1-2; 38:22,31,31). Hur was the offspring of Caleb and Ephrath, and one of his descendants was Salmon, or Salmah, figuratively "father of Bethlehem," actually father of Boaz, and progenitor of the royal house of David of Bethlehem (1Ch 2:19,50-51,54; Ru 4:20-21).
