an obligation of any kind (Nu 30:2,4,12). The word means also oppression or affliction (Ps 116:16; Php 1:7). Christian love is the "bond of perfectness" (Col 3:14), and the influences of the Spirit are the "bond of peace" (Eph 4:3).

If a man vows a vow unto the LORD, or swears an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
And her father hears her vow, and her bond with which she has bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond with which she has bound her soul shall stand.
