During their journeys across the wilderness, the twelve tribes formed encampments at the different places where they halted (Ex 16:13; Nu 2:3). The diagram here given shows the position of the different tribes and the form of the encampment during the wanderings, according to Nu 1:53; 2:2-31; 3:29,35,38; 10:13-28.

The area of the camp would be in all about 3 square miles. After the Hebrews entered Palestine, the camps then spoken of were exclusively warlike (Jos 11:5,7; Jg 5:19,21; 7:1; 1Sa 29:1; 30:9, etc.).

When the tent of meeting is moved, the Levites will stay in the middle of the groups. The tribes will move out in the same order as they are in the camp, everyone in place under his own flag (staff) (scepter). On the west side the armies led by Ephraim will camp under their flag. Elishama, son of Ammihud is the leader for the people of Ephraim. The total number of men in his army is forty thousand five hundred. Next to them will be the tribe of Manasseh. The leader for the people of Manasseh is Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur. The total number of men in his army is thirty-two thousand two hundred. Then will be the tribe of Benjamin. The leader for the people of Benjamin is Abidan, son of Gideoni. The total number of men in his army is thirty-five thousand four hundred. The grand total of all the troops in Ephraim's camp is one hundred and eight thousand one hundred. They will be the third group to move out. On the north side the armies led by Dan will camp under their flag. The leader for the people of Dan is Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai. The total number of men in his army is sixty-two thousand seven hundred. Next to them will be the tribe of Asher. The leader for the people of Asher is Pagiel, son of Ochran. The total number of men in his army is forty-one thousand five hundred. Then will be the tribe of Naphtali. The leader for the people of Naphtali is Ahira, son of Enan. The total number of men in his army is fifty-three thousand four hundred. The grand total of all the men in Dan's camp is one hundred and fifty-seven thousand six hundred. They will be the last group to move out. They will travel under their own flag.
The families descended from Kohath put up their tents on the south side of the tent of meeting.

Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai was in command. Pagiel son of Ochran commanded the tribe of Asher. Ahira son of Enan commanded the tribe of Naphtali. This was the order of march, company by company, when the Israelites broke camp and set out.

The Camp' was a common expression used of Israel in the wilderness: the tabernacle in the centre and the twelve tribes, each in its appointed place, arranged around it, composed the camp.

CAMP, or ENCAMPMENT, of the Israelites. The whole body of the people, consisting of six hundred thousand fighting men, beside women and children, was disposed under four battalions, so placed as to enclose the tabernacle, in the form of a square, and each under one general standard. (See Armies.) There were forty-one encampments, from their first in the month of March, at Rameses, in the land of Goshen, in Egypt, and in the wilderness, until they reached the land of Canaan.
