the Greek form, rendered "devil" in the Authorized Version of the New Testament. Daemons are spoken of as spiritual beings (Mt 8:16; 10:1; 12:43-45) at enmity with God, and as having a certain power over man (Jas 2:19; Re 16:14). They recognize our Lord as the Son of God (Mt 8:20; Lu 4:41). They belong to the number of those angels that "kept not their first estate," "unclean spirits," "fallen angels," the angels of the devil (Mt 25:41; Re 12:7-9). They are the "principalities and powers" against which we must "wrestle" (Eph 6:12).

And when it was evening they brought to him many demoniacs: and he cast out the evil spirits with a word, and healed all that were ill: that it might be fulfilled,
and Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the fowls of heaven their nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
And He called unto Him his twelve disciples, and gave them power over impure spirits, even to cast them out; and to cure all diseases and every malady whatsoever.
Now when an impure spirit is gone out of a man, he wanders through dry desert places, seeking rest, and findeth none: then saith he, I will return into my house, that I came out of; and when he cometh, he findeth it empty, swept, and set off to advantage: read more. then he goeth and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there; and so the last state of that man is worse than the first. And demons also came out from many, crying out, Thou art the Messiah the Son of God. And He rebuked them, and suffered them not to say, that they knew Him to be the Christ.
For our conflict is not with flesh and blood only, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the world and of the darkness of this age, against wicked spirits in heavenly places.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou dost well: the devils also believe and tremble.
