not found in Scripture except indirectly in the original Greek word (elephantinos) translated "of ivory" in Re 18:12, and in the Hebrew word (shenhabim, meaning "elephant's tooth") rendered "ivory" in 1Ki 10:22; 2Ch 9:21.
Job 40:16 Authorized Version margin, but Revised Version margin correctly 'hippopotamus' (see Behemoth). The use of elephants in warfare is frequently noticed in the Books of Maccabees (e.g. 1Ma 3:34; 1Ma 6:30; 1Ma 8:6; 1Ma 11:56, 2Ma 11:4; 2Ma 13:15). See also Ivory.
