The Creation

1 (A)In the beginning (B)God (C)created the heavens and the earth.

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

1 In the beginning(A) God created the heavens and the earth.(a)(B)

1 In the beginning, God created the universe.

1 In the beginning God ((a)Elohim) (b)created [by forming from nothing] the heavens and the earth.(A)

2 The earth was (a)(D)formless and void, and (E)darkness was over the (b)surface of the deep, and (F)the Spirit of God (G)was (c)moving over the (d)surface of the waters.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

2 Now the earth was(b) formless and empty,(C) darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.(D)

2 When the earth was as yet unformed and desolate, with the surface of the ocean depths shrouded in darkness, and while the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters,

2 The earth was (c)formless and void or a waste and emptiness, and darkness was upon the face of the deep [primeval ocean that covered the unformed earth]. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.

3 Then (H)God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

3 Then God said, “Let there be light,”(E) and there was light.

3 God said, "Let there be light!" So there was light.

3 And God said, (d)“Let there be light”; and there was light.

4 God saw that the light was (I)good; and God (J)separated the light from the darkness.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

4 God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.

4 God saw that the light was beautiful. He separated the light from the darkness,

4 God saw that the light was good (pleasing, useful) and (e)He affirmed and sustained it; and God separated the light [distinguishing it] from the darkness.(B)

5 (K)God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And (L)there was evening and there was morning, one day.

5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

5 God called the light “day,” and He called the darkness “night.” Evening came and then morning: the first day.

5 calling the light "day," and the darkness "night." The twilight and the dawn were day one.

5 And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was (f)evening and there was (g)morning, one day.

6 Then God said, “Let there be (e)an (M)expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

6 Then God said, “Let there be an expanse(c) between the waters, separating water from water.”(F)

6 Then God said, "Let there be a canopy between bodies of water, separating bodies of water from bodies of water!"

6 And God said, “Let there be an (h)expanse [of the sky] in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters [below the expanse] from the waters [above the expanse].”

7 God made the (f)expanse, and separated (N)the waters which were below the (g)expanse from the waters (O)which were above the (h)expanse; and it was so.

7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse.(G) And it was so.

7 So God made a canopy that separated the water beneath the canopy from the water above it. And that is what happened:

7 And God made the expanse [of sky] and separated the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so [just as He commanded].

8 God called the (i)expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

8 God called the expanse “sky.”(d) Evening came and then morning: the second day.

8 God called the canopy "sky." The twilight and the dawn were the second day.

8 God called the expanse [of sky] heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

9 Then God said, “(P)Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let (Q)the dry land appear”; and it was so.

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

9 Then God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered into one place,(H) and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.

9 Then God said, "Let the water beneath the sky come together into one area, and let dry ground appear!" And that is what happened:

9 Then God said, “Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place [of standing, pooling together], and let the dry land appear”; and it was so.

10 God called the dry land earth, and the (R)gathering of the waters He called seas; and God saw that it was good.

10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

10 God called the dry land “earth,” and He called the gathering of the water “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

10 God called the dry ground "land," and he called the water that had come together "oceans." And God saw how good it was.

10 God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of the waters He called seas; and God saw that this was good (pleasing, useful) and He affirmed and sustained it.

11 Then God said, “Let the earth sprout (j)(S)vegetation, (k)plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after (l)their kind (m)with seed in them”; and it was so.

11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

11 Then God said, “Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.”(I) And it was so.

11 Then God said, "Let vegetation sprout all over the earth, including seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each kind containing its own seed!" And that is what happened:

11 So God said, “Let the earth sprout [tender] (i)vegetation, (j)plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit according to (limited to, consistent with) their kind, whose seed is in them upon the earth”; and it was so.

12 The earth brought forth (n)vegetation, (o)plants yielding seed after (p)their kind, and trees bearing fruit (q)with seed in them, after (r)their kind; and God saw that it was good.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

12 The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

12 Vegetation sprouted all over the earth, including seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each kind containing its own seed. And God saw that it was good.

12 The earth sprouted and abundantly produced vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, according to their kind; and God saw that it was good and He affirmed and sustained it.

13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.

13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

13 Evening came and then morning: the third day.

13 The twilight and the dawn were the third day.

13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.

14 Then God said, “Let there be (s)(T)lights in the (t)(U)expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for (V)signs and for (W)seasons and for days and years;

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will serve as signs(J) for festivals(e) and for days and years.(K)

14 Then God said, "Let there be lights across the sky to distinguish day from night, to act as signs for seasons, days, and years,

14 Then God said, “Let there be light-bearers (sun, moon, stars) in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be useful for signs (tokens) [of God’s provident care], and for marking seasons, days, and years;(C)

15 and let them be for (u)lights in the (v)expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.

15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

15 They will be lights in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth.” And it was so.

15 to serve as lights in the sky, and to shine on the earth!" And that is what happened:

15 and let them be useful as lights in the expanse of the heavens to provide light on the earth”; and it was so, [just as He commanded].

16 God made the two (w)great lights, the (X)greater (x)light (y)to govern the day, and the lesser (z)light (aa)to govern the night; He made (Y)the stars also.

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

16 God made the two great lights—the greater light to have dominion over the day and the lesser light to have dominion over the night—as well as the stars.(L)

16 God fashioned two great lights the larger light to shine during the day and the smaller light to shine during the night as well as stars.

16 God made the two great lights—the greater light (the sun) to rule the day, and the lesser light (the moon) to rule the night; He made the [galaxies of] stars also [that is, all the amazing wonders in the heavens].

17 (Z)God placed them in the (ab)expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

17 God placed them in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth,

17 God placed them in space to shine on the earth,

17 God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to provide light upon the earth,

18 and (ac)to (AA)govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.

18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

18 to dominate the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness.(M) And God saw that it was good.

18 to differentiate between day and night, and to distinguish light from darkness. And God saw how good it was.

18 to rule over the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good and He affirmed and sustained it.

19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

19 Evening came and then morning: the fourth day.

19 The twilight and the dawn were the fourth day.

19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

20 Then God said, “Let the waters (ad)teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth (ae)in the open (af)expanse of the heavens.”

20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

20 Then God said, “Let the water swarm with(f) living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.”

20 Then God said, "Let the oceans swarm with living creatures, and let flying creatures soar above the earth throughout the sky!"

20 Then God said, “Let the waters swarm and abundantly produce living creatures, and let birds soar above the earth (k)in the open expanse of the heavens.”

21 God created (AB)the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

21 So God created the large sea-creatures(g) and every living creature that moves and swarms in the water,(N) according to their kinds. He also created every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

21 So God created every kind of magnificent marine creature, every kind of living marine crawler with which the waters swarmed, and every kind of flying creature. And God saw how good it was.

21 God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind; and God saw that it was good and He affirmed and sustained it.

22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”

22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

22 So God blessed them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.”(O)

22 God blessed them by saying, "Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the oceans. Let the birds multiply throughout the earth!"

22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”

23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

23 Evening came and then morning: the fifth day.

23 The twilight and the dawn were the fifth day.

23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

24 (AC)Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after (ag)their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after (ah)their kind”; and it was so.

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that crawl, and the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.

24 Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth each kind of living creature, each kind of livestock and crawling thing, and each kind of earth's animals!" And that is what happened:

24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to (limited to, consistent with) their kind: livestock, crawling things, and wild animals of the earth according to their kinds”; and it was so [because He had spoken them into creation].

25 God made the (AD)beasts of the earth after (ai)their kind, and the cattle after (aj)their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

25 So God made the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and creatures that crawl on the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

25 God made each kind of the earth's animals, along with every kind of livestock and crawling thing. And God saw how good it was.

25 So God made the wild animals of the earth according to their kind, and the cattle according to their kind, and everything that creeps and crawls on the earth according to its kind; and God saw that it was good (pleasing, useful) and He affirmed and sustained it.

26 Then God said, “Let (AE)Us make (AF)man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them (AG)rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the (ak)sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

26 Then God said, “Let Us(P) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.(Q) They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth,(h) and the creatures that crawl(i) on the earth.”(R)

26 Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, to be like us. Let them be masters over the fish in the ocean, the birds that fly, the livestock, everything that crawls on the earth, and over the earth itself!"

26 Then God said, “Let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) make man in Our image, according to Our likeness [not physical, but a spiritual personality and moral likeness]; and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, and over the entire earth, and over everything that creeps and crawls on the earth.”(D)

27 God created man (AH)in His own image, in the image of God He created him; (AI)male and female He created them.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

27 So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God;He created them male and female.(S)

27 So God created mankind in his own image; in his own image God created them; he created them male and female.

27 So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.(E)

28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “(AJ)Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the (al)sky and over every living thing that (am)moves on the earth.”

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth,(T) and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls(j) on the earth.”

28 God blessed the humans by saying to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it! Be masters over the fish in the ocean, the birds that fly, and every living thing that crawls on the earth!"

28 And God blessed them [granting them certain authority] and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subjugate it [putting it under your power]; and rule over (dominate) the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

29 Then God said, “Behold, (AK)I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the (an)surface of all the earth, and every tree (ao)which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

29 God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This food will be for you,(U)

29 God also told them, "Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant that grows throughout the earth, along with every tree that grows seed-bearing fruit. They will produce your food.

29 So God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of the entire earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;

30 and (AL)to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the (ap)sky and to every thing that (aq)moves on the earth (ar)which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

30 for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth—everything having the breath of life in it. I have given every green plant for food.”(V) And it was so.

30 I have given all green plants as food for every wild animal of the earth, every bird that flies, and to every living thing that crawls on the earth." And that is what happened.

30 and to all the animals on the earth and to every bird of the air and to everything that moves on the ground—to everything in which there is the breath of life—I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so [because He commanded it].

31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very (AM)good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

31 God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.(W) Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.

31 Now God saw all that he had made, and indeed, it was very good! The twilight and the dawn were the sixth day.

31 God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good and He validated it completely. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.
