A race of early dwellers in mount Seir, whence they were expelled by the Edomites, Ge 14:6; De 2:12,22. They are supposed to have lived in caves, like the men referred to in Job 30:6, and to have been divided into several tribes, Ge 36:20-30.
and the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is near the desert.
These were the sons of Seir the Horite, who were living in the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. These were the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah (who discovered the hot springs in the wilderness as he pastured the donkeys of his father Zibeon). These were the children of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. These were the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. These were the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. These were the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. These were the chiefs of the Horites: chief Lotan, chief Shobal, chief Zibeon, chief Anah, chief Dishon, chief Ezer, chief Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chief lists in the land of Seir.
Previously the Horites lived in Seir but the descendants of Esau dispossessed and destroyed them and settled in their place, just as Israel did to the land it came to possess, the land the Lord gave them.)
