Reference: Jonadab
American
1. A SON OF Shimeah, the cunning and unprincipled nephew of David, and friend of Amnon, 2Sa 13:3-5. Yet he seems to have been long aware of the purpose of Absalom to avenge his sister's dishonor upon Amnon, and very coolly excused the assassination of his friend, 2Sa 13:32-35.
2. A son of Rechab, a Kenite, descended from Hobab the brother of Moses. He was at the head of the Rechabites in the time of Jehu, and seems to have given them a command to abstain from wine, 2Ki 10:15; 1Ch 2:55; Jer 35:6-10. See RECHABITES.

But, Amnon, had a friend, whose name, was Jonadab, son of Shimeah, David's brother, - and, Jonadab, was a very cunning man. And Jonadab said unto him: Take to thy bed, and feign thyself ill, - and, when thy father cometh in to see thee, then shalt thou say unto him - I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, that she may give me food, and let her prepare, before mine eyes, some delicacy, to the end that I may see it made , and so eat at her hand.
Then responded Jonadab son of Shimeah David's brother, and said - Let not my lord say that they have put, all the young men - the king's sons, to death; for, Amnon alone, is dead; for, by the bidding of Absolom, was it appointed, from the day that he forced Tamar his sister. Now, therefore, let not my lord the king lay to his heart such a thing - to say, All the king's sons, are dead, - but, Amnon alone, is dead. read more. Now Absolom had fled. And the young man that was watching lifted up his eyes and looked, and lo! much people, coming on the road behind him, on the mountain-side. So Jonadab said unto the king, Lo! the king's sons, are come, - according to the word of thy servant, so hath it come to pass.
Then departed he from thence, and lighted on Jehonadab son of Rechab coming to meet him, and he blessed him, and said unto him - Is thy heart, right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab said - It is. Then, if it is, give me thy hand. So he gave him his hand. And he took him up to him, into the chariot;
Then said they, - We will not drink wine, - for Jonadab son of Rechab, our father, laid command upon us, saying, Ye shall not drink wine, ye, nor your sons, unto times age-abiding; nor house, shall ye build nor, seed, shall ye sow, nor vineyard, shall ye plant, neither shall ye have them, - but in tents, shall ye dwell, all your days, that ye may live many days on the face of the soil where ye are sojourning. read more. So we have hearkened unto the voice of Jonadab, son of Rechab, our father, in all that be commanded us, - not to drink wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons nor our daughters; and not to bud houses for us to dwell in, - and so, vineyard or field or seed, have we none; but we have dwelt in tents, - and have hearkened and done, according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

Fausets
1. Shimeah's son, David's nephew; "very subtle," worming out the secrets of the heir apparent, Amnon his cousin, to gain favor. Pretending "friendship," he insinuated that a "king's son" ought to gratify his passions without scruple, and not make himself lean by restraining them; and gave the hellish advice whereby that wicked prince incestuously forced his half sister Tamar. Then, when Absalom had in revenge killed Amnon, and the king was heartbroken at the exaggerated story that all the king's sons were slain, Jonadab practiced the same sycophancy to David; not a word does he breathe of his own abominable share in the matter; no sorrow has he for Amnon whose professed "friend" he was, but whose ruin he hurried; "by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar"; "Amnon only is dead, Amnon only is dead"; "let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart" (2 Samuel 13). Evil communication is fatal; the friendship of the wicked is hollow, for it is based on selfishness (Ps 12:2; 141:4-5), and when regard for self comes in collision with regard for a friend, the latter will be set aside for the former; see 1Ki 22:30,32.
2. (See JEHONADAB.)

And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat - I am about to disguise myself, and enter into the battle, thou, therefore, put on thy robes. So the king of Israel disguised himself, and entered into the battle.
And it came to pass, when the chariot-captains saw Jehoshaphat, that, they, said: Surely it is, the king of Israel! But, when they turned aside against him to fight, Jehoshaphat cried out.
Deception, speak they, every one with his neighbour, - with lips uttering smooth things - with a heart and a heart, do they speak.
Let not my heart incline to a matter of wrong, that I should busy myself with practices in lawlessness, with men working iniquity, and let me not eat of their dainties. Let a righteous man smite me - a lovingkindness, that he should correct me, an oil for the head which let not my head refuse! For, yet, even my prayer, shall be in their calamities.

Then entered Jehu, with Jehonadab son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, - and he said unto the servants of Baal - Search ye and see, that there be not here, with you, any of the servants of Yahweh, none but the servants of Baal, alone.
Then said they, - We will not drink wine, - for Jonadab son of Rechab, our father, laid command upon us, saying, Ye shall not drink wine, ye, nor your sons, unto times age-abiding; nor house, shall ye build nor, seed, shall ye sow, nor vineyard, shall ye plant, neither shall ye have them, - but in tents, shall ye dwell, all your days, that ye may live many days on the face of the soil where ye are sojourning. read more. And so it came to pass when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, - Let us even enter, Jerusalem, because of the force of the Chaldeans and because of the force of the Syrians: So have we dwelt in Jerusalem. Then came the word of Yahweh unto Jeremiah, saying: Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, Go and say to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, - Will ye not receive correction by hearkening unto my words? Demandeth Yahweh: Confirmed are the words of Jonadab son of Rechab - which he commanded his sons that they should not drink, wine, and they have not drunk until this day, for they have hearkened unto the command of their father, But, I, have spoken unto you, betimes, speaking, and ye have not hearkened, unto me. And I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, betimes, sending, saying, Return I pray you - every man from his wicked way, And amend your doings, And do not go after other gods to serve them, So shall ye remain on the soil which I gave to you, and to your fathers, - but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened, unto me. Because the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab have, confirmed, the commandment of their father which he commanded them, - whereas, this people, have not hearkened unto me, Therefore, Thus, saith Yahweh, God of hosts, God of Israel, Behold me! bringing in against Judah and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, all the calamity, which I have spoken concerning them, - Because I spake unto them and they did not hearken, And I called to them and they did not answer. But to the house of the Rechabites, said Jeremiah: Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, Because ye have hearkened unto the commandment of Jonadab your father, and have kept all his commandments, and dune according to all that he commanded you Therefore, Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, - Jonadab son of Rechab shall not want one to stand before me, all the days!

Jon'adab
(whom Jehovah impels).
1. Son of Shimeah and nephew of David. (B.C. 1033.) He is described as "very subtle."
His age naturally made him the friend of his cousin Amnon, heir to the throne.
He gave him the fatal advice for ensnaring his sister Tamar. ch
Again, when, in a later stage of the same tragedy, Amnon was murdered by Absalom, and the exaggerated report reached David that all the princes were slaughtered, Jonadab was already aware of the real state of the case.
