American
Were much used by the ancient Hebrews, not chiefly for medical purposes as among us, but as a luxury, Ru 3:3; Ps 104:15; Song 1:2; Mt 6:17; Lu 7:46. Their perfumery was usually prepared in olive oil, and not in volatile extracts and essences. The sacred ointment is described in Ex 30:22-33. The ointments of the rich were made of very costly ingredients, and their fragrance was highly extolled, Isa 39:2; Am 6:6; Mt 26:7-9; Joh 12:5. See ANOINTING.

Jehovah said to Moses: Take top quality spices: twelve pounds of liquid myrrh, six pounds of sweet-smelling cinnamon, six pounds of sweet-smelling cane, read more. and twelve pounds of cassia, according to the official standard. Add one gallon of olive oil, and make sacred anointing oil, mixed like perfume. This is for dedicating the tent and chest, the table with its equipment, the lamp stand with its equipment, the incense altar with all its utensils, the altar for sacrifices, and the large bowl with its stand. You will make them so holy that anyone who even touches them will become holy when you dedicate them this way. Sprinkle Aaron and his sons with this oil when you ordain them as my priests. Say this to the people of Israel: 'This oil must always be used in the ordination service of a priest. It is holy because it is dedicated to Jehovah. So treat it as holy! Do not use it for everyday purposes or mix any for yourselves. If you do, you will no longer belong to Jehovah's people.'
Wash and perfume yourself and put on your best clothes. Go down to the floor. Make yourself known to the man after he is done eating and drinking.
And wine which makes man's heart glad. That he may make his face shine with oil, and food, which sustains man's heart.

Hezekiah received the envoys gladly and showed them what was in his storehouses. He showed them the silver, the gold, the spices, the fine oil, his entire armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in his entire kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.
You drink wine in bowls, and anoint yourselves with the finest oils. But you are not grieved because of the affliction of Joseph.
