Seaport in Lebanon (peviously Syria), about midway between Sidon and Accho. It was a place of great commerce, sending to the East by land and to the West by the sea. This is shown to have been the case in several of the prophets. It was not conquered by the Israelites, and is first spoken of when its king Hiram sent to David cedar trees with carpenters and masons to build David a house. 2Sa 5:11; 1Ch 14:1. He also materially assisted Solomon by sending timber and workmen for the temple. 1Ki 5:1; 2Ch 2:3. The seamen of Tyre also aided in navigating the ships of Solomon.
One specific charge brought against Tyre is that "they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant." Am 1:9. God said of them, "Ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things;" and they had sold the children of Judah to the Grecians. Joe 3:5-6.
Eze 26:2 shows that Tyre, the merchant city of the world, was the rival of Jerusalem, the city of God: "I shall be replenished now she is laid waste." So Babylon (comp. Ezek. 27: with Rev. 18.) is the rival of the new Jerusalem. God was known in the palaces of Jerusalem

King Hiram of Tyre sent some officials to David. Carpenters and stone workers came with them. They brought cedar logs so they could build a palace for David.
When King Hiram of Tyre heard that Solomon succeeded his father as king he sent ambassadors to Solomon. He had always been a friend of David's.
They gave money to the stoneworkers and woodworkers. Meat and drink and oil were given to the people of Zidon and of Tyre, for the transport of cedar-trees from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, as Cyrus, king of Persia, had given them authority to do.
The daughter of Tyre will come with a gift. The rich among the people will seek your favor.
Now in that day Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years like the lifespan of one king. At the end of seventy years it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:
It will come about at the end of seventy years that Jehovah will visit Tyre. Then she will go back to her prostitute's wages and will play the wanton woman with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. The money she earns by commerce will be dedicated to Jehovah. She will not store it away, but those who worship Jehovah will use her money to buy the food and the clothing they need.
so I am going to send for all the families from the north. I will also send for my servant King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, says Jehovah. I will bring the families from the north to attack this land, its people, and all these surrounding nations. I am going to destroy them and turn them into something terrible, something ridiculed, and something permanently ruined. I will take from them the sounds of joy and happiness, the sounds of brides and grooms, the sound of mills, and the light of lamps. read more. This whole land will be ruined and become a wasteland. These nations will serve the king of Babylon for seventy years.'
This is what Jehovah said to me: Make leather straps and a wooden yoke, and strap the yoke on your neck. Then send messages to the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon, with messengers who have come to King Zedekiah of Judah in Jerusalem. read more. Give them an order for their masters: This is what Jehovah of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Say this to your masters, I used my great strength and my powerful arm to make the earth along with the people and the animals on it. I give it to anyone I please. Now I have handed all these countries over to my servant King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. I have even made wild animals serve him. All nations will serve him, his son, and his grandson until Babylon is defeated. Then many nations and great kings will make him their slave.
The time has come to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon any Philistine who might have escaped to get help. Jehovah will destroy the Philistines and anyone who is left from the island of Crete.
Son of man, because Tyre has said concerning Jerusalem, 'Aha, the gateway of the peoples is broken; it has opened to me. I will be filled, now that she is laid waste.'
Son of man, sing a funeral song for the ruler of Tyre. Tell him: 'This is what the Lord Jehovah says: 'You were the perfect example, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, God's garden. You were covered with every kind of precious stone: red quartz, topaz, crystal, beryl, jade, onyx, gray quartz, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald. Your settings and your sockets were made of gold when you were created. read more. I appointed an angel to guard you. You were on God's holy mountain. You walked among fiery stones. Your behavior was perfect from the time you were created, until evil was found in you. By the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. Therefore I have cast you as profane from the mountain of God. I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor. I cast you to the ground. I put you before kings, that they may see you. By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade you profaned your sanctuaries. Therefore I have brought fire from the midst of you. It has consumed you. I have turned you to ashes on the earth in the eyes of all who see you. All who know you among the peoples are appalled at you. You have become terrified. You will cease to be forever.'
Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor hard against Tyre. Every head was made bald and every shoulder was rubbed bare. But he and his army had no wages from Tyre for the labor that he had performed against it. The Lord Jehovah says: 'I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He will carry off her wealth and capture her spoil and seize her plunder. It will serve as wages for his army.
I have seen Ephraim planted in a pleasant meadow like Tyre. But Ephraim will bring out his children for slaughter.
What are you to me, O Tyre, and Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Will you pay recompense (compensation) to me? If you pay recompense to me swiftly and speedily, will I return your recompense upon your own head? You have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my precious treasures into your temples. read more. You sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the sons of the Greeks. You remove them far from their border.
Jehovah continued: For the many transgressions of Tyre I will not withdraw punishment! They captured all the people and delivered them to Edom. They did not remember the brotherly covenant.
Hamath and all that borders on it, including Tyre and Sidon, because they are very wise. Tyre built herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.
Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon that were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the Day of Judgment than for you.
