This was expressed by
1. yam, 'the Sea,' referring to the Mediterranean, which lies on the west of Palestine, Ge 12:8, etc.
2. maarab, ?????, 'sun-setting,' because the sun sets in the west. 1Ch 7:28; Mt 8:11; etc.
3. maarabah, 'sun-setting,' only in Isa 45:6.
4. mebo hashshemesh, from the 'going down of the sun,' only in Jos 23:4; Zec 8:7.
From there he moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and worshiped Him.
See, I have allotted these remaining nations to you as an inheritance for your tribes, including all the nations I have destroyed, from the Jordan westward to the Mediterranean Sea
Their holdings and settlements were Bethel and its villages; Naaran to the east, Gezer and its villages to the west, and Shechem and its villages as far as Ayyah and its villages,
so that all may know from the rising of the sun to its setting that there is no one but Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other.
The Lord of Hosts says this: "I will save My people from the land of the east and the land of the west.
I tell you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
