in Galilee, to the north of Issachar and south of Asher and Naphtali (Jos 19:10-16), and between the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean. According to ancient prophecy this part of Galilee enjoyed a large share of our Lord's public ministry (Isa 9:1-2; Mt 4:12-16).
And the third lot came unto the children of Zebulun according unto their kindreds. And the coasts of their inheritance came to Sarid, and went up to the sea and to Mareal, and touched at Dabbesheth, and met at the river that lieth before Jokneam; read more. and turned from Sarid eastward toward the sun rising unto the border of Chisloth in mount Tabor: and then goeth out to Daberath and goeth up to Japhia; and from thence goeth along eastward toward the sun rising, to Gathhepher, Ethkazin, and goeth to Rimmon, Methoar, and Neah. And compasseth it on the north side and goeth to Nathan, and endeth in the valley of Iphtahel. And Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem: Twelve cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the Children of Zebulun, in their kindreds, the said cities with their villages.
Even like as in time past it hath been well seen, that the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, wherethrough the sea way goeth over Jordan in to the land of Galilee, was at the first in little trouble, but afterward sore vexed. The people that have dwelt in darkness, shall see a great light. As for them that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them shall the light shine.
When Jesus had heard that John was taken, he departed into Galilee; and left Nazareth, and went and dwelt in Capernaum, which is a city upon the sea in the coasts of Zebulun and Naphtali: read more. to fulfill that which was spoken by Isaiah the Prophet, saying, "The land of Zebulun and Naphtali, the way of the sea beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; the people which sat in darkness saw great light and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light has begun to shine."
