And he struck the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he struck of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had struck many of the people with a great slaughter.

For because you did it not at the first, the LORD our God broke forth upon us, for we sought him not about the proper order. So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel.
But the priests were too few, so that they could not skin all the burnt offerings: therefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests.
