And the number of them was twenty three thousand, of all the males from a month old and above. For they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.

And unto the sons of Merari were given by lot among their kindreds and out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities. And the children of Israel gave the Levites such cities with their suburbs, and that by Lot, out of the tribe of children of Judah out of the tribe of Simeon and out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin: even the said cities that are rehearsed by name. And concerning the sons of Kohath, the cities of their coasts were of the tribe of Ephraim. In which tribe they gave unto them the cities of Refuge: Shechem in mount Ephraim with her suburbs, and Gezer with her suburbs, Jokmeam with her suburbs, Bethhoron with her suburbs, Aijalon with her suburbs, and Gathrimmon with her suburbs. And out of the half tribe of Manasseh, Aner with her suburbs, and Bileam with her suburbs among the kindreds of the remnant of the sons of Kohath. And unto the sons of Gershom were given out of the kindred of the half tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan with her suburbs and Ashtaroth with her suburbs. And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kadesh with her suburbs, Daberath with her suburbs, Ramoth with her suburbs and Anem with her suburbs. And out of Asher, Mashal with her suburbs, Abdon with her suburbs, Hukok with her suburbs and Rehob with her suburbs. And out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kadesh in Galilee with her suburbs, Hammon with her suburbs, and Kiriathjearim with her suburbs. And unto the rest of the children of Merari were given out of the tribe of Zebulun, Rimmono with her suburbs and Tabor with her suburbs. And on the other side Jordan by Jericho, even on the east side of Jordan, were given them out of the tribe of Reuben: Bezer in the wilderness with her suburbs, Jahzah with her suburbs, Kedemoth with her suburbs, Mephaath with her suburbs. And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, Mahanaim with her suburbs, Heshbon with her suburbs, and Jazer with her suburbs.
