Shimei son of Gera from the tribe of Benjamin and the town of Bahurim, hurried down with the people of Judah to meet King David. One thousand people from Benjamin were with him. Ziba the servant of Saul's family rushed to the Jordan River across from the king. Ziba brought his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They brought David's family and servants back across the river. David promised Shimei that he would not be killed.

King David arrived at Bahurim. A man who was a distant cousin of Saul came out cursing. His name was Shimei, son of Gera. Shimei threw stones at David and his officials. But I am like some one deaf and speechless. I am like one who cannot hear and who can offer no arguments.

How horrible it is to live as a foreigner in Meshech or to stay in the tents of Kedar. I have lived too long with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but when I talk about it, they only talk about war.

The king sent for Shimei and said to him: Build a house for yourself here in Jerusalem. Live in it and do not leave the city. Three years later, however, two of Shimei's slaves ran away to the king of Gath, Achish son of Maacah. When Shimei heard that they were in Gath, he saddled his donkey and went to King Achish in Gath, to find his slaves. He found them and brought them back home. When Solomon heard what Shimei did, he sent for him and said: I made you promise in Jehovah's name not to leave Jerusalem. I warned you that if you ever did, you would die. Jehovah will punish you for it. But he will bless me, and he will make David's kingdom secure forever. The king gave orders to Benaiah son of Jehoiada. He killed Shimei. Solomon was now in complete control.
