Foods are for the belly, and the belly for foods, but God will destroy both of them. Now the body is not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. What? Do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute is one (united with her) body? For he said: Two will be one flesh. He who is joined to the Lord is one (united with him in) spirit. Flee from fornication! Every sin that a man does is outside his body. But he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. What? Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit? That one (Greek: hos he ho which, that one) is in you. You received it from God. You are not your own. You are bought with a price! Therefore glorify God in your body.

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. The wife has no authority over her own body, but her husband does. Likewise also the husband has no authority over his own body, but his wife does. Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent for a time. That way you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer. Then come together again, that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But I speak this by concession and not by commandment. I prefer that all men were as I am. But every man has his proper gift from God, one after this manner, and another after that. I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, it is good for them if they stay unmarried like me. But if they cannot control themselves, let them marry. It is better to marry than to be inflamed [with lust].
