Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the country of Edom.

Give these instructions to the people: You will pass through the territory of your relatives, the descendants of Esau. They live in Seir. They will be afraid of you. Therefore watch yourselves carefully. Do not start a fight with them, because I am not giving you any of their land, not so much as one foot. I gave Esau's descendants the region of Mount Seir as their property.
