But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, and those that were with him, when he was hungry, how he entered into the house of God and ate the showbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for those who were with him, but only for the priests?

For the king had taken counsel with his princes and with all the congregation in Jerusalem, to keep the passover in the second month. For they could not keep it at that time, because there were not enough priests sanctified, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem. So they established a decree to make proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beersheba even to Dan, that they should come to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem because for a long time they had not done it as it is written.

For there were yet many in the congregation that were not sanctified; therefore, the Levites had the charge of the killing of the passovers for each one that was not clean, to sanctify them unto the LORD. For a multitude of the people, even many of Ephraim and Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, and they ate the passover not as it was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, The good LORD pardon each one that has prepared his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, even though he is not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary. read more.
And the LORD hearkened to Hezekiah and healed the people.


for because ye did not do it thus at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us because we did not seek him according to his ordinance. So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel.

But the priests were too few so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings; therefore, their brethren, the Levites, helped them until the work was ended and until the other priests had sanctified themselves, for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests.
