The disciples asked him, saying, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" He answered them, "Elijah indeed comes first, and will restore all things, but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them."

He told them, "Elijah indeed comes first, and restores all things. And why is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be rejected? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they have also done to him whatever they wanted to, even as it is written about him."

They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." They said therefore to him, "Who are you? The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.' I did not know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water: that he would be revealed to Israel." And John testified, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him. And I did not recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water, he said to me, 'On whomever you will see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, this is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.' And I have seen and have testified that this is the Chosen One of God."
