John 11:1

Now a man named Lazarus was sick; he lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

John 11:2

It was the Mary who poured perfume upon the Master and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

John 11:3

So the sisters sent this message to Jesus: "Master, your friend is sick."

John 11:4

When Jesus received it he said, "This sickness is not to end in death, but is for the honor of God, that through it the Son of God may be honored."

John 11:5

Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

John 11:6

So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed on for two days in the place where he was,

John 11:7

and then afterward said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."

John 11:8

The disciples said to him, "Master, the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and are you going back there again?"

John 11:9

Jesus answered, "Is not the day twelve hours long? If a man travels by day he will not stumble, for he can see the light of this world;

John 11:10

but if he travels at night he will stumble because he has no light."

John 11:11

He told them this, and then he added, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him."

John 11:12

The disciples said to him, "Master, if he has fallen asleep he will recover."

John 11:13

Now Jesus had referred to his death. But they supposed that he meant a natural falling asleep.

John 11:14

So Jesus then told them plainly,

John 11:15

"Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may learn to believe in me. But let us go to him."

John 11:16

So Thomas the Twin said to his fellow-disciples, "Let us go also, and die with him."

John 11:17

When Jesus arrived he found that Lazarus had been buried for four days.

John 11:18

Now Bethany is only about two miles from Jerusalem,

John 11:19

and a number of Jews had come out to see Mary and Martha, to condole with them about their brother.

John 11:20

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went out to meet him, but Mary remained at home.

John 11:21

Martha said to Jesus, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died!

John 11:22

Even now I know that anything you ask God for, he will give you."

John 11:23

Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise."

John 11:24

Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise at the resurrection, on the Last Day."

John 11:25

Jesus said to her, "I myself am Resurrection and Life. He who believes in me will live on, even if he dies,

John 11:26

and no one who is alive and believes in me will ever die. Do you believe that?"

John 11:27

She said to him, "Yes, Master, I do indeed believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."

John 11:28

With these words she went and called her sister Mary, whispering to her, "Here is the Master, asking for you."

John 11:29

When she heard it she sprang up and went to him,

John 11:30

for Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.

John 11:31

The Jews who were sitting with her in the house, condoling with her, when they saw Mary spring up and go out, supposed that she was going to weep at the tomb, and followed her.

John 11:32

When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, and said, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died!"

John 11:33

When Jesus saw her weep and the Jews who had come with her weeping too, repressing a groan, and yet showing great agitation,

John 11:34

he said, "Where have you laid him?" They answered, "Come and see, Master."

John 11:35

Jesus shed tears.

John 11:36

So the Jews said, "See how much he loved him!"

John 11:37

But some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of that blind man, have kept Lazarus from dying?"

John 11:38

Again repressing a groan, Jesus went to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid against the mouth of it.

John 11:39

Jesus said, "Move the stone away." The dead man's sister, Martha, said to him, "Master, by this time he is decaying, for he has been dead four days."

John 11:40

Jesus said to her, "Have I not promised you that if you will believe in me you will see the glory of God?"

John 11:41

So they moved the stone away. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for listening to me,

John 11:42

though I knew that you always listen to me. But I have said this for the sake of the people that are standing around me that they may believe that you have made me your messenger."

John 11:43

After saying this he called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

John 11:44

The dead man came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and with his face muffled with a handkerchief. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him and let him move."

John 11:45

So it came about that many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and saw what Jesus did, came to believe in him,

John 11:46

but some of them went back to the Pharisees and told them what he had done.

John 11:47

Then the high priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council, and they said, "What are we to do about the fact that this man is showing so many signs?

John 11:48

If we let him go on, everybody will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and put an end to our holy place and our people."

John 11:49

But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them,

John 11:50

"You know nothing about it. You do not realize that it is to your interest that one man should die for the people, instead of the whole nation being destroyed."

John 11:51

Now he was not self-moved in saying this, but as high priest for that year he was inspired to say that Jesus was to die for the nation??52 and not only for the nation but also for the purpose of uniting the scattered children of God.

John 11:52

John 11:53

So from that day they planned to kill Jesus.

John 11:54

In consequence of this, Jesus did not appear in public among the Jews any longer, but he left that neighborhood and went to the district near the desert, to a town called Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.

John 11:55

Now the Jewish Passover Festival was approaching and many people went up to Jerusalem from the country, to purify themselves before the Passover.

John 11:56

So they were looking for Jesus there, and asking one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? Do you think he will not come to the festival at all?"

For the high priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where he was should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
