Now when Jesus was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, there came to him a woman having an alabaster bottle of very costly ointment, and poured it on his head while he was reclining at table. But the disciples seeing it, were much displeased, saying, To what purpose is this waste?. read more.
For this might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. And Jesus, perceiving it, said to them, Why do ye trouble the woman? For she hath done a good deed to me. For the poor ye have always with you; but me ye have not always. For she, in pouring this ointment on my body, hath done it to prepare me for burial. Truly do I say to you, Wherever these glad tidings shall be published in the whole world, this too which she hath done will be told for a memorial of her.

They made therefore a supper for him there, and Martha served; but Lazarus was one of those who reclined at the table with him. Then Mary, taking a pound of ointment of pure spikenard, very costly, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment. read more.
But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, he who was about to betray him, saith, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred denaries, and given to the poor? And this he said, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and kept the purse, and bore what was put therein. Then said Jesus, Let her alone, that she may keep it until the day of my burial. For the poor ye have always with you, but me ye have not always. The great multitude of the Jews therefore knew that he was there; and they came, not only on account of Jesus, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he raised from the dead.
