John 19:1

Then Pilate order'd Jesus to be scourged.

John 19:2

and the soldiers having made a crown of thorns, they put it on his head, and threw a purple robe about him.

John 19:3

hail king of the Jews! said they, and struck him on the cheeks.

John 19:4

Pilate therefore went out again, and said to them, observe, I bring him out to you, to acquaint you that I find no fault in him.

John 19:5

so Jesus marched out wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. and Pilate said to them, here's the man.

John 19:6

as soon as the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, "crucify him, crucify him." Pilate said to them, take him yourselves, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

John 19:7

the Jews answered him, we have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he pretended to be the son of God.

John 19:8

Pilate upon hearing that, was still more apprehensive.

John 19:9

and went again into the Pretorium, and said to Jesus, who was your father? but Jesus gave him no answer.

John 19:10

then said Pilate to him, won't you give me an answer? don't you know that it is in my power to crucify you, or to release you?

John 19:11

Jesus answered, you could not have any power over me, except you deriv'd it from above: therefore they who delivered me into your hands are the most culpable.

John 19:12

upon this, Pilate propos'd to release him: but the Jews cried out, if you let this man go, you are not Cesar's friend: he that sets up for king, opposes Cesar.

John 19:13

Pilate therefore hearing them talk at this rate, order'd Jesus to be brought forth, and then sat down in a place of Mosaic work on his tribunal, in Syriac call'd Gabbatha.

John 19:14

it was then about the sixth hour of the day before the sabbath of the passover: and he said to the Jews, behold your king.

John 19:15

but they cried out, away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, shall I crucify your king? the chief priests answered, we have no king but Cesar.

John 19:16

upon which he delivered him up to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took Jesus and led him away.

John 19:17

and he bearing his cross, marched out to a place called the skull, which is in the Syriac, Golgotha: where they crucified him,

John 19:18

and two others with him, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle.

John 19:19

and Pilate caused an inscription to be put over the cross, in these words, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

John 19:20

now this inscription was read by many of the Jews: for Jesus was crucified nigh the city: and it was written in Syriac, Greek, and Latin.

John 19:21

thereupon the chief priests of the Jews went to Pilate, saying, don't write, "The king of the Jews;" but that he said, I am king of the Jews.

John 19:22

Pilate answered, what I have writ, I have writ.

John 19:23

The soldiers, after they had crucified Jesus, took his garments (and made four parts, to every soldier a part) and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

John 19:24

they said therefore among themselves, let us not rent it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: so that the scripture was fulfilled, which said, "they parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots." this was what the soldiers actually did.

John 19:25

In the mean time the mother of Jesus, and her sister Mary, the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene, were standing by the cross.

John 19:26

when Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing by, he said to his mother, woman, behold thy son.

John 19:27

then he said to the disciple, behold thy mother. and from that time the disciple took her to his own home.

John 19:28

after this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be be fulfilled, said, I thirst.

John 19:30

when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, it is finished: and bowing his head, he expir'd.

John 19:31

Now for fear the bodies should remain upon the cross on the sabbath-day, for it was then the eve of the pascal-sabbath, a day of high solemnity, the Jews desired Pilate that their legs might be broke, and that they might be taken away.

John 19:32

accordingly the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him.

John 19:33

then they came to Jesus, and finding that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.

John 19:34

but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and immediately blood and water issued out.

John 19:35

he that relates this, was an eye-witness of it, and his relation is true: and he is so assured, what he says is true, that you may rely upon it.

John 19:36

for these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, "a bone of him shall not be broken."

and again the scripture saith elsewhere, "they shall look on him whom they pierced."

Nicodemus, who formerly went to Jesus by night, came likewise and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

John 19:40

they took therefore the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, according to the manner of burial among the Jews.

John 19:41

now near the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, in which no body had ever yet been laid.

John 19:42

as this sepulchre was nigh at hand, they laid Jesus therein, because the time of the preparation of the Jews was expiring.
