One day as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, came up to him

Luke 20:2 (show verse)

and said to him, "Tell us by what authority are you doing these things? Or who it is that gave you this authority."

He answered them, "I also will ask you a question; now tell me,

the baptism of Johnwas it from heaven or from men?"

Luke 20:5 (show verse)

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why did you not believe him?'

Luke 20:6 (show verse)

But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet."

Luke 20:7 (show verse)

So they answered that they did not know where it was from.

Luke 20:9 (show verse)

Then he began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it to vine-dressers, and went into another country for a long time.

Luke 20:10 (show verse)

At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants, that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

Luke 20:11 (show verse)

He sent another servant; him also they beat and treated shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

Luke 20:12 (show verse)

He sent a third; and they wounded him and cast him out.

Luke 20:13 (show verse)

Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.'

Luke 20:14 (show verse)

But when the tenants saw him, they reasoned among themselves and said, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'

Luke 20:15 (show verse)

So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

Luke 20:16 (show verse)

He will come and destroy those tenants, and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "May this never be!"

Luke 20:17 (show verse)

But he looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone'?

Luke 20:18 (show verse)

Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder."

Luke 20:19 (show verse)

The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, but they feared the peoplefor they knew that he had spoken this parable against them.

So they watched him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might catch him on what he said, in order to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

Luke 20:23 (show verse)

But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them,

Luke 20:24 (show verse)

"Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's."

Luke 20:25 (show verse)

He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

Luke 20:26 (show verse)

And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him by what he said. But marveling at his answer they were silent.

Luke 20:27 (show verse)

Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him,

Luke 20:28 (show verse)

and they questioned him, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the wife and raise up children for his brother.

Luke 20:29 (show verse)

Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children.

Luke 20:30 (show verse)

And the second

Luke 20:31 (show verse)

and then the third took her, and in the same way the seven died, and they left no children.

Luke 20:32 (show verse)

Finally the woman died also.

Luke 20:33 (show verse)

In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will she be? For all seven had her as wife."

Luke 20:34 (show verse)

And Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.

Luke 20:35 (show verse)

But those who are considered worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage,

Luke 20:36 (show verse)

nor can they die any more, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

Luke 20:37 (show verse)

But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord 'the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.'

Luke 20:38 (show verse)

Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to him."

Luke 20:39 (show verse)

And some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you have spoken well."

Luke 20:40 (show verse)

For they no longer dared to ask him any question.

And he said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David?
