Matthew 1:1

The birth-roll of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Matthew 1:2

Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

Matthew 1:3

Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Aram,

Matthew 1:4

Aram the father of Aminadab, Aminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,

Matthew 1:5

Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, Obed the father of Jessai,

Matthew 1:6

and Jessai the father of king David. David was the father of Solomon by Uriah's wife,

Matthew 1:7

Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa,

Matthew 1:8

Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah,

Matthew 1:9

Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,

Matthew 1:10

Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah,

Matthew 1:11

and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the period of the Babylonian captivity.

Matthew 1:12

After the Babylonian captivity, Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,

Matthew 1:13

Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,

Matthew 1:14

Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud,

Matthew 1:15

Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,

Matthew 1:16

Jacob the father of Joseph, and Joseph (to whom the virgin Mary was betrothed) the father of Jesus, who is called 'Christ.'

Matthew 1:17

Thus all the generations from Abraham to David number fourteen, from David to the Babylonian captivity fourteen, and from the Babylonian captivity to Christ fourteen.

Matthew 1:18

The birth of [Jesus] Christ came about thus. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they came together she was discovered to be pregnant by the holy Spirit.

Matthew 1:19

As Joseph her husband was a just man but unwilling to disgrace her, he resolved to divorce her secretly;

Matthew 1:20

but after he had planned this, there appeared an angel of the Lord to him in a dream saying, "Joseph, son of David, fear not to take Mary your wife home, for what is begotten in her comes from the holy Spirit.

Matthew 1:21

She will bear a son, and you will call him 'Jesus,' for he will save his people from their sins."

Matthew 1:22

All this happened for the fulfilment of what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

Matthew 1:23

The maiden will conceive and bear a son, and his name will be called Immanuel (which may be translated, God is with us).

Matthew 1:24

So on waking from sleep Joseph did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him; he took his wife home,

Matthew 1:25

but he did not live with her as a husband till she bore a son, whom he called Jesus.
