Jesus answered them, "I will also ask you one question. If you answer me then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Where did John's baptism come from? From heaven or from people?" They discussed this among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Then why did you not believe him?' But if we say, 'From people,' we fear the crowd, for they all consider John to be a prophet." read more.
So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Then he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.


But if we say, 'From people -- '" (they feared the crowd, for they all considered John to be truly a prophet).

Now they wanted to arrest him (but they feared the crowd), because they realized that he told this parable against them. So they left him and went away.

But if we say, 'From people,' we fear the crowd, for they all consider John to be a prophet."

The chief priests and the experts in the law heard it and they considered how they could assassinate him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed by his teaching.

So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Then he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

"Look, my servant will succeed! He will be elevated, lifted high, and greatly exalted --

Then the Pharisees went out and planned together to entrap him with his own words. They sent to him their disciples along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You do not court anyone's favor because you show no partiality. Tell us then, what do you think? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" read more.
But Jesus realized their evil intentions and said, "Hypocrites! Why are you testing me? Show me the coin used for the tax." So they brought him a denarius. Jesus said to them, "Whose image is this, and whose inscription?" They replied, "Caesar's." He said to them, "Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
