Then the Pharisees went and took counsel how to entangle him in his talk. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and teach the way of God in truth, and you care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men. Tell us, then, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"

saying, "Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother must marry the widow, and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and having no children, he left his wife to his brother. So the second also, and the third, down to the seventh. read more.
After them all, the woman died. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her."

And as they were at table eating, Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me." They began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one by one, "Is it I?" He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, one who dips bread into the dish with me. read more.
For the Son of Man goes just as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born." And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, "Take; this is my body." Then he took the cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, but they feared the peoplefor they knew that he had spoken this parable against them. So they watched him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might catch him on what he said, in order to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor. And they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and you do not show partiality, but teach the way of God in truth. read more.
Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, "Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's." He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him by what he said. But marveling at his answer they were silent.

That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question, saying, "Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother must marry the widow, and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and having no children, he left his wife to his brother. read more.
So the second also, and the third, down to the seventh. After them all, the woman died. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her." But Jesus answered them, "You are wrong, because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. But as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living." And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

Then some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him; and they asked him a question, saying: "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the wife, and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no children. read more.
And the second took her, and he died; leaving behind no children. And the third likewise. So the seven had her and left no children. Last of all the woman died also. In the resurrection, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife." Jesus said to them, "Is not this why you are wrong, that you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken."

And the second and then the third took her, and in the same way the seven died, and they left no children. Finally the woman died also. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will she be? For all seven had her as wife." And Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, nor can they die any more, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord 'the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.' Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to him." And some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you have spoken well." For they no longer dared to ask him any question.

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on the things above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

When he said this, a dissension broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor an angel, nor a spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.
