Matthew 27:1 (show verse)
AND when it was morning all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to kill him.
Matthew 27:2 (show verse)
And having bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate, the procurator.
Matthew 27:3 (show verse)
Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repenting, returned the thirty shekels of silver [$16.80] to the chief priests and elders,
Matthew 27:4 (show verse)
saying, I have sinned, betraying innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see you to it.
Matthew 27:5 (show verse)
And throwing down the silver in the temple he departed; and having gone away strangled himself.
Matthew 27:6 (show verse)
And the chief priests taking the silver said, It is not lawful to put it into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
Matthew 27:7 (show verse)
And taking counsel, they bought with it the potter's field for a burying place for strangers.
Matthew 27:8 (show verse)
For this reason, the field is called a field of blood to this day.
Matthew 27:9 (show verse)
Then was fulfilled the word spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying; And they took the thirty shekels of silver, the price of him that was prized, whom [men] from the sons of Israel set a price upon,

and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me.
Matthew 27:11 (show verse)
And Jesus stood before the procurator; and the procurator asked him, saying, Are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, As you say.

And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders he answered nothing.

Then Pilate said to him, Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?
Matthew 27:14 (show verse)
And he answered him not a word; so that the procurator wondered greatly.
Matthew 27:15 (show verse)
And at the feast the procurator was accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner, whom they chose;
Matthew 27:16 (show verse)
and he then had a noted prisoner called Barabbas.
Matthew 27:17 (show verse)
When, therefore, they were assembled together, Pilate said to them, Which do you wish me to release to you? Barabbas? or Jesus, called Christ?

For he knew that they had delivered him up from envy.
Matthew 27:19 (show verse)
And as he sat on the tribunal his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that just man, for I have suffered much to-day on his account, from a dream.
Matthew 27:20 (show verse)
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the people to ask for Barabbas, and to destroy Jesus.
Matthew 27:21 (show verse)
And the procurator answered and said to them, Which of the two do you wish me to release to you? And they said, Barabbas.
Matthew 27:22 (show verse)
Pilate said to them, What then shall I do to Jesus, called Christ? They all said, Let him be crucified.
Matthew 27:23 (show verse)
But he said, [No]; for what evil has he done? And they cried more vehemently, saying, Let him be crucified.
Matthew 27:24 (show verse)
And Pilate seeing that he accomplished nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this man; see you to it.
Matthew 27:25 (show verse)
And all the people answered and said, His blood be upon us and upon our children.
Matthew 27:26 (show verse)
Then he released Barabbas to them, and having scourged Jesus delivered him up to be crucified.

THEN the soldiers of the procurator taking Jesus to the Praetorium assembled about him the whole cohort,

and stripped him, and put on him a crimson cloak,
Matthew 27:29 (show verse)
and making a crown of thorns they put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they knelt before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
Matthew 27:30 (show verse)
And they spit on him, and took the reed and beat him on his head.
Matthew 27:31 (show verse)
And when they had mocked him, they took the cloak off from him, and put on him his own clothes, and led him away to crucify him.

And going out, they found a Cyrenian by the name of Simon, whom they compelled to bear his cross.
Matthew 27:33 (show verse)
And coming to a place called Golgotha, which is called A place of a cranium,
Matthew 27:34 (show verse)
they gave him vinegar to drink mixed with gall; and when he had tasted of it he would not drink.
Matthew 27:35 (show verse)
And having crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots,
Matthew 27:36 (show verse)
and sat down and watched him there.
Matthew 27:37 (show verse)
And they put over his head his accusation, written; THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Matthew 27:38 (show verse)
Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Matthew 27:39 (show verse)
And those who went by blasphemed him, wagging their heads,
Matthew 27:40 (show verse)
and saying, You that destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.
Matthew 27:41 (show verse)
And the chief priests in like manner also mocked him, with the scribes and elders, and said,
Matthew 27:42 (show verse)
He saved others, himself he cannot save. If he is the king of Israel let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe on him;
Matthew 27:43 (show verse)
he trusted in God; let him deliver him if he wishes for him; for he said, I am a Son of God.
Matthew 27:44 (show verse)
The robbers also that were crucified with him did the same, and reproached him.
Matthew 27:45 (show verse)
And from the sixth hour there was darkness on all the land till the ninth hour;
Matthew 27:46 (show verse)
and at about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Matthew 27:47 (show verse)
And some of those standing there hearing him, said, He calls for Elijah.
Matthew 27:48 (show verse)
And one of them ran immediately to him, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and putting it on a reed gave it to him to drink.
Matthew 27:49 (show verse)
But the rest said, Let him alone; let us see if Elijah will come and save him.
Matthew 27:50 (show verse)
And Jesus crying again with a loud voice, gave up the spirit.
Matthew 27:51 (show verse)
And behold, the vail of the temple was rent in two, from top to bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks rent,

and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of saints that slept arose,
Matthew 27:53 (show verse)
and going out of the tombs, after his resurrection entered into the holy city, and appeared to many.
Matthew 27:54 (show verse)
And the centurion and those with him watching Jesus, seeing the earthquake, and the [other] events which occurred, were greatly afraid, and said, Certainly, this was a Son of God.

And there were many women there, beholding from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, to wait upon him;
Matthew 27:56 (show verse)
among whom were Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Matthew 27:57 (show verse)
And when it was evening a rich man came from Arimathea, by the name of Joseph, who himself also was a disciple of Jesus;
Matthew 27:58 (show verse)
this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded it to be given him;
Matthew 27:59 (show verse)
and Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in clean linen,
Matthew 27:60 (show verse)
and placed it in a new tomb of his which he had excavated in a rock, and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb he went away;
Matthew 27:61 (show verse)
and Mary the Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite to the tomb.
Matthew 27:62 (show verse)
AND on the next day, which is after the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees were assembled together to Pilate,
Matthew 27:63 (show verse)
and said, Sir, we remember that this deceiver said when he was yet alive, After three days I will rise.
Matthew 27:64 (show verse)
Command, therefore, the tomb to be made safe till the third day, lest his disciples should come and steal him, and say to the people, He is raised from the dead, and the last error be worse than the first.
Matthew 27:65 (show verse)
Pilate said to them, You have a guard; go and make it as safe as you can.
Matthew 27:66 (show verse)
And they went and made the tomb safe with a guard, having sealed the stone.
