Matthew 27:1 (show verse)

And, when morning came, all the high priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so as to put Him to death;

Matthew 27:2 (show verse)

and, binding Him, they led Him away, and delivered Him up to Pilate, the governor.

Matthew 27:3 (show verse)

Then Judas, who betrayed Him, seeing that He was condemned, repenting, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the high priests and the elders,

Matthew 27:4 (show verse)

saying, "I sinned, having betrayed innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? You may see to that."

Matthew 27:5 (show verse)

And, throwing the pieces of silver into the temple, he withdrew; and, going away, he hanged himself.

Matthew 27:6 (show verse)

And the high priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, "It is not lawful to cast them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood."

And, taking counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for a burial-place for the strangers.

Matthew 27:8 (show verse)

Wherefore, that field was called "A field of blood" until this day.

Matthew 27:9 (show verse)

Then was fulfilled that spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him Who was priced, Whom some of the sons of Israel priced,

and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me."

Matthew 27:11 (show verse)

And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, "Art Thou the King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, "You say it."

And, while He was being accused by the high priests and elders, He answered nothing.

Matthew 27:13 (show verse)

Then says Pilate to Him, "Hearest Thou not how many things they testify against Thee?"

Matthew 27:14 (show verse)

And He did not answer him, not even to one word; so that the governor greatly wondered.

Matthew 27:15 (show verse)

And at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner, whom they desired;

Matthew 27:16 (show verse)

and they then had a noted prisoner called Barabbas.

Matthew 27:17 (show verse)

When, therefore, they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do ye desire that I should release to you? Barabbas or Jesus Who is called Christ?"

For he knew that because of envy they delivered Him up.

Matthew 27:19 (show verse)

And, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that Righteous One; for I suffered many things today in a dream because of Him."

But the high priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes, that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

Matthew 27:21 (show verse)

And the governor, answering, said to them, "Which of the two do ye desire that I should release to you?" And they said, Barabbas."

Pilate says to them, "What, then, shall I do to Jesus Who is called Christ?" They all say, "Let Him be crucified."

Matthew 27:23 (show verse)

But he said, "Why, what evil did He perform?" And they were crying out the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!"

And Pilate, seeing that it availed nothing, but rather a tumult was being made, taking water, washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this Man. Ye shall see to it."

And all the people, answering, said, "His blood be upon us, and upon our children."

Matthew 27:26 (show verse)

Then he released to them Barabbas; but, having scourged Jesus, he delivered Him up to be crucified.

Then the soldiers of the governor, taking Jesus into the Praetorium, gathered to Him the whole band.

And, having stripped Him, they put on Him a scarlet robe;

Matthew 27:29 (show verse)

and, having platted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and, kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

And, having spit on Him, they took the reed, and smote Him on the head;

Matthew 27:31 (show verse)

and, when they mocked Him, they took off the robe from Him, and put on His own garments, and led Him away to crucify Him.

And, coming out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they impressed to bear the cross.

And, having come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say "Place of a skull,"

they gave Him to drink wine mingled with gall; and, having tasted it, He would not drink.

Matthew 27:35 (show verse)

And, having crucified Him, they divided His garments among them, casting lots;

Matthew 27:36 (show verse)

and, sitting down, they watched Him there.

Matthew 27:37 (show verse)

And they put over His head His accusation, "THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

Matthew 27:38 (show verse)

Then are there crucified with Him two robbers, one on the right hand and one on the left.

Matthew 27:39 (show verse)

And those passing by were reviling Him, wagging their heads,

Matthew 27:40 (show verse)

and saying, "Thou Who destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days, save Thyself: if Thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross."

Likewise also the high priests, mocking, with the scribes and elders, were saying,

Matthew 27:42 (show verse)

"Others He saved, Himself He cannot save! King of Israel is He! let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on Him!

Matthew 27:43 (show verse)

He has trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He desireth Him; because He said, 'I am God's Son.'"

And the robbers, who were crucified with Him, were reproaching Him with the same thing.

And from the sixth hour there came darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.

Matthew 27:46 (show verse)

And, about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "My God! My God! Why didst Thou forsake Me?"

And some of those standing there, hearing it, said, "This One is calling for Elijah.

And straightway one of them, running and taking a sponge, and filling it with vinegar, and putting it on a reed, was giving Him to drink.

But the rest said, "Let alone! Let us see whether Elijah is coming to save Him!"

And Jesus, crying again with a loud voice, yielded up His spirit.

And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two, from top to bottom; and the earth was shaken; and the rocks were rent;

and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;

and, coming forth out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered into the holy city, and appeared to many.

And the centurion, and those with him watching Jesus, seeing the earthquake, and the things that were taking places were exceedingly frightened, saying, Truly, This was a Son of God!"

And many women were there, beholding from afar, who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him;

Matthew 27:56 (show verse)

among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

And, evening having come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, whose name was Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus.

This man, going to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given up.

Matthew 27:59 (show verse)

And, taking the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen,

Matthew 27:60 (show verse)

and laid it in his own new tomb, which he hewed out in the rock; and, having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away.

And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

And on the morrow which, indeed, is the day after the Preparation, the high priests and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate,

saying, Sir, we were reminded that that Deceiver said, while yet living, 'After three days I rise again;'

Matthew 27:64 (show verse)

order, therefore, that the sepulchre be made secure until the third day, lest haply His disciples, coming, should steal Him away, and say to the people, 'He was raised from the dead;' and the last error will be worse than the first."

And Pilate said to them, "Ye have a guard; go your way, secure it, as ye know how."

Matthew 27:66 (show verse)

And, going, they made the sepulchre secure, sealing the stone, in connection with the guard.
