the captain bade him to be brought into the castle: and commanded him to be scourged, and to be examined, that he might know wherefore they cried on him.

Then straightway departed from him they which should have examined him. And the high captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman: because he had bound him.

"'When a man lieth with a woman and hath to do with her, which is a bondwoman and hath been meddled withal of another man; but not loosed out nor hath obtained freedom, it shall be punished: but they shall not suffer death, because she was not free.



Then let the elders of that city take that man and chastise him,

And if the trespasser be worthy of stripes, then let the judge cause to take him down and to beat him before his face according to his trespass, unto a certain number. Forty stripes he shall give him and not pass: lest if he should exceed and beat him above that with many stripes, thy brother should appear ungodly before thine eyes.

One reproof only doth more good to him that hath understanding, than a hundred stripes unto a fool.

I will therefore chasten him, and let him loose."


And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, "Get thee to Anathoth unto thine own fields, for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time kill thee, because thou hast borne the Ark of the Lord Jehovah before David my father, and because thou sufferest with my father in all his afflictions."

Then the king sent and called Shimei, and said to him, "Build thee a house in Jerusalem and dwell there and see that thou go not once thence any whither. For be thou sure of it: the day thou goest out and passest over the river of Kidron, thou shalt die for it, and thy blood shall be on thine own head." And Shimei said unto the king, "It is well said: as my lord the king hath said, so will his servant do." And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many a day.


And he took Joseph and put him in prison: even in the place where the king's prisoners lay bound. And there continued he in prison,
