An altar of earth you shall make for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings, and your peace offerings, your sheep, and your oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto you, and I will bless you. And if you will make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone: for if you lift up your tool upon it, you have polluted it. Neither shall you go up by steps unto my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.

And there shall you build an altar unto the LORD your God, an altar of stones: you shall not lift up any iron tool upon them. You shall build the altar of the LORD your God of whole stones: and you shall offer burnt offerings on it unto the LORD your God: And you shall offer peace offerings, and shall eat there, and rejoice before the LORD your God.

Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal, As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man has lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.
