And I consulted with myself; and I remonstrated with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother! And I set a great assembly against them. And I said to them, We, according to our ability, have redeemed our brethren the Jews, who were sold to the nations; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? And they were silent and found no answer. And I said, The thing that ye do is not good. Ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, so as not to be the reproach of the nations our enemies?

They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge; They turn the needy out of the way: the afflicted of the land all hide themselves. They reap in the field the fodder thereof, and they gather the vintage of the wicked; They pass the night naked without clothing, and have no covering in the cold; They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and for want of a shelter embrace the rock ... They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor:

But that bondman having gone out, found one of his fellow-bondmen who owed him a hundred denarii. And having seized him, he throttled him, saying, Pay me if thou owest anything. His fellow-bondman therefore, having fallen down at his feet, besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee. But he would not, but went away and cast him into prison, until he should pay what was owing.
